Local Florist Wins
Top Contest Prize
Jimmy Duff brought back
the highest award that has ever
been presented to a florist in
North Georgia from the recent
Southern Retail Florist Asso
ciation Christmas Design
School at Charlotte, N. C.
Some 2,500 florists partic
ipated in the show, the largest
such show in the South. Partic
ipants included florists from
Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama,
Texas, North Carolina, South
Carolina, and Florida.
Duff, owner of Duff’s
Flowers, Gifts, and Furniture
of Summerville, and Dale
Peppers, an employee of eight
years, entered a bridal table in
the category of Most Elegant
Christmas Bride’s Table. They
won the top prize in this cate
gory. There were no first,
second, or third prizes. Theirs
was one of only nine prizes
given in the entire show. Their
prize was a lovely silver punch
bowl, tray and cups, valued at
over $350.
John Munday of Henderson,
N. C., director of the florist
association, made the presenta
tion.
Although Duff has been at
tending the schools for some
15 years, this was the first time
he had entered the competi
tion.
The bride’s table was cov
ered with off white peau de
soie and lace over taffeta. The
centerpiece was a tall brass
candelabrum, with white
tapers, and a Hogarth curve
arrangement with white carna
tions, pearlized grapes, and
springrye fern. Gold Christmas
balls, with pearl pins, were also
used.
On one end of the table, a
cut crystal punch bowl on a
brass base was surrounded with
pearlized grapes and white
carnations with springrye fern.
The opposite end of the prize
winning table featured a lovely
three-tiered wedding cake

SWEET POTATO
COBBLER
Hallie Martin makes the best
old-fashioned sweet potato
cobbler. Try it for a real treat.
Peel and dice round and
round sweet potatoes. Place
round of pie dough in deep
baking dish, add sweet pota
toes. For 5 or 6 large potatoes,
use one and a half to two cups
of sugar to which a generous
amount of nutmeg has been
added, along with a stick of
melted butter and water
enough to cover the potatoes.
Also add about one teaspoon
vanilla flavoring. Add round of
crust to top. Make a hole for
steam to escape through.
Bake at 300 or 350 degrees
for about an hour depending
on your oven. Take out of
stove. Pour all the sweet milk
the dish will hold through the
hole in the curst, or lift the
whole top crust and pour the
milk in. hole in the crust, or
lift the whole top crust and
