Begins Trip
To Georgia
ATLANTA-One of the
world's largest 3,600-rpm gen
erators has begun a 10-day,
1,000-mile journey from
Schenectady, N. Y., to Georgia
Power Co.’s Plant Bowen, near
Cartersville.
Elaborate arrangements
were necessary to transport the
770,000-pound generator to
Georgia. A special train con
sisting of a locomotive, an
empty spacer car, the stator
car, another spacer, and a
caboose was assembled by the
stator’s manufacturer. General
Electric.
The stator car is specially
designed to carry cargo of
mammoth proportions such as
the generator's. The car itself
weighs 488,000 pounds, with a
carrying capacity of 500 tons.
