THOUGHTFUL PEOPLE
A very generous and
thoughtful woman, she hunts
up old tin types of the family
and faded pictures and has
reproductions made for all her
relatives and gives copies to
them. She even takes clippings
of pictures of her relatives out
of the paper and has photo
graphs made of them. All this
generosity and kindness with
no strings attached.
The happy elderly lady took
a younger, single friend in to
see her cupboard simply loaded
with canned fruits, vegetables,
meats, etc. (all store bought).
She said, “I want you to feel
free to come in and get any
thing you want or need at any
time. If I'm not at home, come
on in and help yourself.”
These two women are what
someone has termed as “plus
people " The world needs more
like them. And we need to hear
more about people like this.
The friend showed me her
photo album, which she prob
ably treasures more than any
thing in the house with the
exception of her husband. It
would be the one thing she
would want to save in the
event of a fire or storm.
She has many old family
pictures as well as recent ones.
There are pictures of her in the
frilly dresses that babies used
to wear, pictures all the way
from growing up until the
present time. Pictures of her
children and husband. Pictures
of her relatives and friends. 1
spotted a picture of her mother
and father on their SOth
wedding anniversary. “1 made
that picture,” I told her. She
said, “Yes. you did. You gave

me a number ot pictures that I

Everybody, I think, has a
desire for some part of them
selves to live on when they are
dead and gone, lor many
people, they feel a sense of
continuity with time through
their children, l or those who
don’t have children, their con
tinuity with time must out in
some other fashion. Perhaps it
might be a kindness that some
one remembers, even a stranger
they don’t know or will never
see again. Perhaps it might be a
word fitly spoken that might
clarify a situation, such as a
conversation a friend told me
about recently.
“I was disappointed when
my second child was a girl. I
wanted another boy. I told a
friend. ‘I wanted a son.’ I’ll
never forget what she told me
as she looked straight in the
eye. ‘You have a son.’ ” Some
how after that the lady was
content to accept her darling
daughter and also appreciate
the one son the more.
Actors live on as their
movies are still shown after
their decease.
Writers live on as long as
anyone reads their books, or
sayings, or clippings. Some
never attain the heights of
fame or fortune, but something
they have written may be
meaningful in years to come as
a clipping in someone’s scrap
book. The same is true of
artists, Sunday school teachers,
and preachers.
Some people are remem
bered by their wit, and friends
can quote jokes they told 50
years after they are gone.
One elderly friend does not
try to contact his deceased
wife through seances or
spiritualists. He reads her well
marked Bible, and feels not
only a warm closeness to her,
but to God as well. So reading
and marking a Bible, or a
lavorite book, might be a
wonderful heritage to pass on
to a friend or a loved one.
One favorite relative of
mine lives on in my heart, al
though she departed this life
many years ago. She always
looked so happy to see us
coming and put another big
backstick on the open hearth if
it was winter. She loved to feed
us, and I shall never forget her
beet pickles and cherry pies. ,
Also, she would take us to the
flower pit and show us her
pink and red and white flowers
blooming in the winter, some
times even when she had to
rake back the snow off the
window sashes over them.
One lady lives on because
she always invited us to pick
her violets. Naturally, at this
season, I think fondly of her.
Some people, sadly enough,
live on in memories as a
splinter or as a thorn in the
flesh.
Ideally, 1 believe we would
all conclude it would be
making a greater contribution
to this old world to leave a few
pleasant memories.
I wish such wholesome and
lovely magazines as Ideals were
required reading for every
citizen of the United States. I
have been enchanted with the
Easter Ideals and recommend
them to one and all.
Somehow in the winter, I
often trip up on my resolu
tions, so I’m making some
spring resolutions. And one of
them is to be happy and spread
joy and sunshine, and 1 pray
that nothing will stop me.
