gave a very interesting demon
stration on this subject. One of
the first steps he advised is to
take a soil sample to be sure of
the right fertilizer to be used
and to see if lime is needed in
the soil. It is very important
not to use too much of the
wrong type of plant food.
Some vegetables are heavy
feeders, some need medium
and some are light feeders, he
said.
A good variety of vegetables
is important, also ones that
freeze well, as some vegetables
freeze better than others.
Purcell said weed control
can be used very successfully in
a garden when used correctly.
Also the correct use of insecti
cides was brought out and the
kind to use for the different
types of insects and diseases.
Proper care and feeding of
fruit trees, pecans, etc., were
also discussed. Time to feed
and spray is very important, he
stated. Many times a mistake is
made by going too deep when
working a garden as the feeding
roots are on top of the ground,
and if you go too deep the
feeding roots are broken, the
plant will wilt and often die.
As gardening time is at
hand, the demonstration was
met with much response.
The meeting was called to
order by Mrs. Lillie Alexander,
club president. The devotional
was led by Mrs. Hattie Lee
Mathis. Each member present
quoted a Bible verse. Mrs.
Nettie Owens led the group in
prayer
Roll call was answered by
each member present giving a
“green thumb” tip.
Members were reminded of
the Achievement Banquet and
Dress Review coming in May,
date and place to be an
nounced later.
The club was proud to have
Mrs. Vivian Cargle, Mrs. Nettie
Owens, and Mrs. Eva Collins,
after being absent for various
reasons. The Club welcomes
and encourages any interested
homemaker to meet with
them.
During the social hour,
refreshments were served by
the hostess, Mrs. Hattie Lee
Mathis. The meeting adjourned
until the next regular meeting
day.

Gardening Is Topic
At Lyerly Meeting
A demonstration on garden
ing was given by M. H. Purcell,
county Extension chairman, at
the Lyerly Homemakers meet
ing held recently at the home
of Mrs. Ruth Cook.
The demonstration centered
around preparation of soil,
weed control, and amount of
fertilizer, such as one gallon of
10-10-10, or 13-1 3-1 3 for each
100-foot row. This should be
mixed in the soil so it will not
rot the seed, preferably just
under the seed or to the side.
Purcell pointed out that the
gardener should follow the
directions on the container as
to the amount of herbicide—
the DCPA is used two tea
spoons full mixed with sand to
one hundred foot row, before
planting seed. This should
make us happy as it will
control the weeds in the row of
vegetables, with no more dig
ging.
The business session which
preceded the demonstration
was presided over by the presi
dent, Mrs. Claudia Wyatt. Mrs.
Ruth Cook read from the third
chapter of Proverbs for her
devotional after which she led
the group in prayer. Each
member answered the roll call
with a “green thumb tip.” A
poem, “A Tribute to the Bible
School Teacher” was read by
Mrs. Cook. Mrs. Nancy White
read the minutes of the March
meeting which were approved
