Steer Wrestling Is Popular Rodeo Event
Steer wrestling, a longtime
popular rodeo event, is a man
sized job and known as the
he-man event in professional
rodeo.
It takes a man with a lot of
muscle power and intestinal
fortitude to jump from the
back of a running horse to the
back of an 800-pound
longhorn steer, and then
wrestle the spirited animal to
the ground in a matter of
seconds.

known as bulldogging, is only
one of the rodeo events to be
featured at Chattooga Line
backers Rodeo on May 2-3 at
the new rodeo grounds, situ
ated behind the Summerville
Recreation Center.
The history of this event is
interesting. It was first origi
nated by a black cowboy, Bill
Pickett.
As the story goes, Pickett
was riding herd one day and in
trying to cut a herd-quitting
steer back to the bunch of
cattle, he became so
exasperated he jumped from
his horse’s back onto the steer,
grabbed both horns and
wrestled the animal to the
ground. Pickett found this
rather dangerous sport fun and
continued practicing it when
he had an opportunity.
Later Pickett began putting
on exhibitions of his
“bulldogging” at early day
rodeos and then other cowboys
began catching on to it.
Through the years, the event
has become a popular event in
professional rodeo.
As in calf roping and team
roping, the horses used in this
event are highly trained
animals. The cowboys partici
pating in steer wrestling
normally prefer Quarter Horses
because of the fast start and
intelligence of these horses.
Three jumps out of the starting
box, the Quarter Horse can hit
full stride.
The horses are highly
trained to put the cowboy in a
position to make his jump onto

WAIT—DON’T DIVE
An expert swimmer, who
taught college men how to
swim and dive, couldn’t sleep
one night. He decided to go to
the swimming pool and have a
swim, thinking that the exer
cise would induce sleep.
Telling his experience, he
said: “I didn’t put the lights
the running steer.
In steer wrestling, another
cowboy assists the contestant
doing the actual steer
wrestling. The second cowboy
is called a “hazer” and it is his
job to leave the starting box
with the steer. Once in the
arena, this cowboy rides
alongside the steer to keep him
from attempting to turn away
from the steer wrestler’s horse.
As in calf roping, the steer
gets a head start on the steer
wrestler.
Here, as in all other rodeo
events, the animal gets the
advantage-making it tougher
for the tough cowboys who
compete in professional rodeo.
on. I knew every inch of the
place, and the roof was made
of glass. The moon shone
through, throwing the shadow
of my body on the wall at the
other end of.the pool. 1 started
to dive. My body and arms
made a perfect sign of the
cross! I carfnot explain to you
why J did not dive at that
moment. I had no premonition
of anger of any kind. As I
stood looking at the shadow of
the cross, I began to think of
the cross of Christ and its
meaning. I was not a Christian.
I found myself repeating the
words of a hymn I had learned
as a boy: ‘He died that I might
be forgiven.’ I cannot tell you
how long I stood poised on the
diving board, or why I did not
dive. I came down from the
board and walked along the
pool to the steps that I knew
led to the bottom of the pool
and began to descend.
I reached the bottom and
my feet touched the cold,
smooth bottom of the pool.
The night before the caretaker
had drained the pool dry and I
knew nothing about it! I
realized then that had I dived, 1
would have dived to my death!
The cross on the wall saved me
that night. I was so thankful to
God for His mercy in sparing
my life I knelt on the cold
bricks and asked the Christ of
the cross to save my soul. I
experienced a two-fold
deliverance that night!”
Thereafter the swimming
instructor would never enter a
pool until he had dipped his
big toe into the water in the
pool!-Selected
Perhaps, reader, you have
not repented and trusted the
Lord Jesus Christ—who died on
the cross for your sins, was
buried, but arose the third day
according to the scriptures-to
,be your Lord and Savior.
“Despisest thou the riches of
his goodness and forbearance
and longsuffering; not knowing
that the goodness of God
leadeth thee to repentance?”
(Romans 2:4)
Turn to God now! Trust the
Lord Jesus Christ for the
salvation of your soul now!
Then obediently serve the Lord
from a grateful heart because
of His salvation.

Educators

ATLANTA—“It is time to
strike a new bargain between
the education establishment
and the society it serves,” State
Superintendent of Schools
Jack P. Nix told teachers at
tending the Georgia Associa
tion of Educators Conference
in Atlanta Friday.
“Education, if it is to con
tinue to ask and receive addi
tional funds for the purpose of
improving the quality of in
struction, is going to have to
come through with some
provable results-some substan
tial, tangible returns for those
dollars,” Nix said. He called on
the educators to “carefully
analyze how we are spending
tax funds, to eliminate the un
productive methods and con
centrate on the programs that
work.”
“If we do not attempt to be
more accountable for our
product, we may find the
public funding well running
dry.”
Nix expressed appreciation
to the Georgia legislature for
the “unprecedented amount of
state funds to implement
almost every phase of the new
