Corner
liy Max Thom an
In what was a slight shock
for avid sports fans, Joe
Thomas was fired from his,
general manager position with
the Baltimore Colts.
Thomas, who rebuilt the
Colts from 5-9, 4-10 and 2-12
seasons into two consecutive
AFC Eastern Division titles,
finally lost out in his struggle
for power with his boss, Colts
owner Robert Irsay.
Ted Marchibroda, the Colts'
fine head coach, also figured in
Thomas' release from the club.
One wonders which is the
most important to a good foot
ball team, the head coach oi
the general manager.
Both are like bacon and
eggs, salt and pepper or bread
and butter; they go together
with one being a great asset to
the other.
A head coach can’t win
without the horses (John
McKay’s Tampa Bay Bucca
neers proved that) and a
general manager can’t have a
good team without a good
head coach.
Static had been building in
the Colts organization since
Marchibroda resigned his post
last Sept. 5, one week before
the 1976 season. Marchibroda
was rehired two days later fol
lowing a players' revolt led by
quarterback Bert Jones. After
Jones demanded to be traded,
Marchibroda was rehired with
increased powers and another
year was added to his contract.
Irsay, with his back to the
wall, obviously decided it was
better to rehire his coach and
keep his players happy. It was
this move that gave Marchi
broda the upper hand on
Thomas.
The controversial Thomas
had caused constant bickering
in the Colts organization for a
long time. Moves such as call
ing Johnny Unitas over the
telephone to advise the former
great quarterback that he was
being benched upset both
Johnny U. and Marchibroda.
This move later resulted in the
trade of Unitas to the San
Diego Chargers where he fin
ished a brilliant career.
Thomas had also received
static from Marchibroda when
he allowed linebacker Mike
Curtis to go in the expansion
draft and traded backup quar
terback Marty Donires.
Although Thomas had made
some controversial moves he
has a proven track record
behind him. Building Miami
and Minnesota, two expansion
clubs, into contenders was
proof enough. Turning Balti
more back into a well re
spected powerhouse, after tear
ing apart the 1971 Super Bowl
winners and watching his teams
go through three horrendous
rebuilding seasons, was further
icing on the cake.
I, for one, disagreed with
Thomas when he first arrived
on the scene at Baltimore 1
couldn’t understand why he
wanted to take a perennial win
ning team and destroy it. His
three disastrous seasons just
added fuel to the fire in my
opinion.
I didn’t agree with Thomas
on the Unitas situation either.
Johnny Unitas was an old pro
and a great quarterback who
was a great competitor. He was
popular with Colt fans. Sure,
Unitas was washed up with his
greatest years behind him.
Sure, there was a good, young
quarterback on the bench by
the name of Bert Jones with a
strong arm and enough talent
to make Baltimore Colt fans
forget Johnny U., but Unitas
had put many good years in
with the Colts organization and
deserved the chance to step
iown with dignity The man
deserved more than a phone
call from the general manager.
He deserved to be told person
ally. He was that kind of foot
ball player and that kind of
man
Believing Thomas was a mad
man who was destroying
Irsay's franchise. I soon
believed in Thomas' ability as
much as Thomas believed in it
himself He had the winners to
prove it. I finally decided he
was a genius, at least a genius
in his profession,
"I see men around this
league posing as general man
agers.'' Thomas said, following
his firing “They have a nice
smile, they shake hands with
everybody, laugh and giggle
Hut they have teams that are
3-11 and 4-10,”
Thomas doesn’t pose as a

How could Atlanta Falcon
fans ever forget the way the
insidious Thomas intimidated
the Falcons into believing he
was going to pick Steve
Bartkowski as his first choice
m the annual college draft The
worried Falcons, who were due
to have third choice of the
cream of the crop, traded the
Colts their third choice plus
All-Pro lineman George Kunz
for the coveted first draft
choice. The Colts went on to
tab the man they were going to
pick in the first place and
ended up with one of the best
linemen tn the league tn the
process. Fhe Falcons ended up
with Bartkowski, minus George
Kunz What a rip-off.
Although Robert Irsay
thought Thomas’ excessive
salary demands and tight for
power was absurd, some owner
will think he’s worth what he’s
asking and will pay the price.
' Thomas will be a general man

35 percent above normal.
Across the region, heating re
quirements were 32 percent
above normal at Chattanooga
and Memphis, 38 percent at
Nashville, 40 percent at Knox
ville, and 44 percent at Hunts
ville, Ala.
TVA power charges have
declined in recent months and
are at about the same levels
they were last winter. How
ever, this winter’s cold trend
has made heating requirements
the largest in several years.
Cold weather and heating
requirements on Jan. 17,
pushed power demands on the
TVA system to an all-time
record, even though industrial
power use in the region still is
somewhat below normal be
cause of present business con
ditions.
TVA said the effect of the
cold on a consumer’s electric
bill will depend partly on the
date the electric meter was
read, since bills cover power
consumption since the previous
reading and not for a calendar
month.
