SPINNERBAITS—THE
ART AND SCIENCE
I don’t know how much art
there is, or science either for
that matter, in fishing a spinner
bait effectively. I do know
there is a lot more to fishing
one than just “chunking” it
out and reeling it back at the
same speed.
The simplest method for
adding to the appeal of a
spinnerbait, is to vary the rate
of your retrieve. Reel is a cast
as fast as you can, then grind
one back ultra slow. Combine
several speeds in a single ■
retrieve with a portion of it ;
slow and the remainder fast.
Many anglers miss strikes on
spinnerbaits because they don’t
concentrate on the lure as it :
sinks right after it hits the
water. As a spinnerbait sinks, |
the blades flutter and the skirt j
wiggles so tantalizingly that |
“Old Brer Bucketmouth” can’t
resist giving it a chomp. It i
doesn’t take him long to realize ;
that what he is trying to eat |
isn’t edible, so he (pardon me
ladies) spits it out. The bass
fisherman who sits and day
dreams as his spinnerbait sinks | j
misses the vast majority of ।
these strikes because he isn’t i ;
alert enough to detect the | ।
strike in time to set the hook.
Many bassmen know how ।
effective a spinnerbait can be *

when it is cast close to stick up
structure. The most common
mistake in fishing a spinnerbait
around these stick ups is not
casting far enough past the
stick up. The average garden
variety of fisherman will cast
directly toward the stick up or
less than a yard behind it. Your
cast should be considerably
past the stick up so it can sink
deep enough to tempt any fish
that are holding by the stick
up. Bass usually hang out close
to the bottom near these stick
ups-so work your spinnerbait
deep.
While we are on the topic of
stick ups, another good
technique is to cast past the
stick up and begin your
retrieve while the lure is still
relatively shallow. When the
spinnerbait is right next to the
stick up, stop your retrieve and
let the lure flutter toward the
bottom. Be ready for a strike-it
is very subtle most of the time.
When you get any suspicious
behavior on the end of the line,
set the hook and set it hard!
A bass has a hard mouth
that is composed primarily ofj
bone so don’t be bashful when
you set the hook. A trailer
hook will increase your
chances of hooking a bass (by
about 50 percent) when you
are using spinnerbaits.
One of my favorite spring
time spinnerbait techniques is
“buzzing.” This is simply.

Local Church Joining
In Television Protest
Over a quarter of a million
persons are expected to turn
off their television sets during
the week of April 11-18 as part
of a four-phase positive protest
being sponsored nationwide by
the Church of God denomina
tion. Pastor Bernard Young of
the local Church of God has
announced that his congrega
tion will join the effort.
“We believe that it is time
to do something more than just
complain about current tele
vision programming,” the
pastor stated. “We intend to
take personal action, beginning
in our own homes, that hope
fully will bring about positive
change in viewing habits and
eventually in the media itself.”
According to the announce
ment from the denomination’s
Family Life Commission in
Cleveland, Tenn., the week of
non-viewing is the initial phase
retrieving as fast as you can
with the lure just barely under
the surface. Bass will
frequently strike a lure fished
in this mannerjust as you lift it
lout of the water so stay on
ivour toes.

ot a tour-phase program to be
carried out over a period of 10
months. The first part of the
program will be followed by an
I emphasis on family television
control. In September a nation
j wide survey of viewers will be
conducted to determine the 10
highest rated programs as well
■ as the 10 which are rated the
lowest. The sponsors of the 10
lowest-rated programs will be
written and asked to reconsider
their sponsorship of these
shows. Finally, in January, if
no positive response has been
, received from the sponsors, a
I product boycott will be organ
ized as a protest against the
I sponsorship of undesirable
programming. Along with the
product boycott, a letter
writing campaign to television
networks and to local tele
vision stations will be pro
moted.
The Church of God is one
of the several denominations
planning organized campaigns
to stop the proliferation of
television programs which
emphasize violence and sex.
