Trion Varsity Skunks Fairmount,
But Drop One to Armuchee; Girls
Stay in Slump with Two Losses
By TERI RUSH
TRION-FAIRMOUNT
BOYS’ GAME
Fairmount’s Coach Norris
Hall described Friday night’s
game against the Trion
Bulldogs perfectly when he
remarked, “That’s the best
anyone’s ever shot against us.
It wasn’t necessarily poor
defense, either, it was just
shooting. I’ve never coached
against a team that shot like
that, that’s the honest truth.
Nobody’s ever shot the ball
like that against us.”
Coach Hall, as well as his
team, seemed a bit dazed after
the powerful Indians romped
over Fairmount 92-61.
Leading in the outstanding
performance against Fairmount
were Al Ray McCutchins and
Chris Hoover as they
repeatedly, and successfully,
brought the ball down the
court, passing to team
members Jeff Meadows and
Don Jennings for many high
action-plays. The first quarter
ended with Trion netting 25
points to Fairmount’s 12.
Play slowed very little
during the second period with
Hoover blocking many of the
shots of the Fairmount
Bulldogs while McCutchins
continued to sink basket after
basket. The Fairmount squad
set up a tough defense but
were unable to hold back Trion
when Don Jennings repeatedly
passed the ball to Rodney
Love, who in turn passed to
high scorer McCutchins,
bringing the halftime score to
47-25.
Trion’s second string
members Randy Hamilton,
Eddie Baldwin and Darrell
Croft continued to hold the
Fairmount Bulldogs down just
is well when they were put in
the game early during the third
period. The score at the end of
the period was 70-37.
Fairmount wasn’t about to
give up as shown by their
netting 26 points during the
fourth period. Whenever they
could get under the arms of
Trion’s guards, it usually
resulted in added points with
their surprisingly accurate late
game shooting. Trion began to
slack off in its defense and
became more offensive
mended, which helped
Fairmount rack up a series of
points. With 44 seconds left in
the game, Trion’s Randy
Hamilton passed the ball to
Baldwin for another two
points. Baldwin then
rebounded the ball from
Fairmount’s backboard, scored
two more points, and he ended
the game with a score of 92-61.
Total individual scores saw
McCutchins with 29 points,
Hoover netting 21, and Sid
Witt and Don Jennings adding
10 points each.
Other scorers included Dar
rell Croft, contributing 8
points, while Jeff Meadows
added 6. Rodney Love and
Eddie Baldwin finished with 4
noints each.
GIRLS’ GAME AGAINST
FAIRMOUNT
The Trion Lady Bulldogs
put up a valiant effort but were
still unable to overcome the
tremendous defense shown by
the Fairmount Lady Bulldogs
in their Friday night ball game.
Trion squad members Sally
Tanner and Sherry Baker got
the game off to a fast start
with tricky passing, making
Trion the first scorer on the
board. Throughout the first

quarter this same pattern ot
passing between Tanner and
other team members would be
shown as they rounded up 14
points to Fairmount’s 12.
During the second period
suprise was written all over the
faces of the Fairmount players
when Trion’s Suzanne Thomas
stole the ball during some of
their passing tricks, handing it
over to Tanner who went down
court for two points. With this
Fairmount began to get into
some aggressive defense and
pushy offensive, leaving Trion
barely ahead at halftime 24-22.
The third quarter opened
with Tanner passing effectively
as she passed the ball to
Thomas for still another
basket. Such plays, along with
outstanding rebounding,
brought the Trion team an
additional 12 points and left
the quarter’s score at 36-30.
What had looked like a
likely win for Trion changed
drastically during the fourth
period. Fairmount began to
drive through Trion’s defensive
line and chalked up a respect
able 16 points.
Turnovers had been a prob
lem throughout the game for
Trion and now it became even
more of a weak spot.
The Lady Trion Bulldogs
added free throws but only
scored 5 points the entire
period, helpless against the
powerful drive of the Fair
mount girls, leaving the game’s
final tally at 46-41 with
another defeat for Trion.
Trion’s Coach Skipper
Stewart summed the game up,
saying, “If we can ever get to
where we can play four quar
ters of ball, we’ll be allright.
All we can do is play three
quarters, just can’t seem to
play four quarters.”
He added, “We have got our
girls rebounding. We out
rebounded them 35-19, which
is improving.”
Sherry Baker, an instru
mental part of the Trion team
work, brought in 15 points as
Cindy Mosley added 12. Donna
Bethune netted 7 points,
Suzanne Thomas totaled 5, and
Sally Tanner, who lead in the
passing field, finished with 2
points.
VARSITY BOYS
ARMUCHEE
It was a long battle as the
Trion Bulldogs gave up their
undefeated record at the hands
of the Armuchee Indians on
Tuesday night. The ’Dogs fell
behind several times but always
kept coming back with their
determined offense. It was the
foul shots that made the real
difference in this close game.
Both teams had 13 foul shots
but Trion scored only on 4,
where Armuchee scored on 7.
This won the game for them
with a score of 63-60.
Leading scorers for Trion
were Sid Witt with 17 points,
Al Ray McCutchins bringing in
14, and Don Jennings ending
with 13.
VARSITY GIRLS
ARMUCHEE
The Armuchee girls’ team
defeated Trion 69-49 Tuesday
night.
Armuchee had a great
height advantage and a defense
that Trion could rarely get
through.
Trion set up defense after
defense only to have them
penetrated by the Armuchee
squad.
Sally Tanner, a valuable
defensive player, fouled out
early in the fourth quarter and
with this Trion’s defense began
to break down. The final score
ended at 69-49 leaving the
Trion girls shooting one in five.

CHATTOOGA VS.
LAKEVIEW FT. OGLETHORPE
After building a seemingly
solid 13-point halftime lead,
the Chattooga Indians col
lapsed under a devastating
comeback staged by the Lake
view-Fort Oglethorpe Warriors
and fell 66-57. A 25-point,
8-rebound performance by
Andre Hoskins was not enough
to hold back the poised War
riors as Odell Mosteller was the
only other Indian scoring in
double figures. Mosteller
banged in 17 points and
grabbed 9 rebounds, but was,
like the other Indians, almost
totally shut down in the
second half. Most notably
missing from the high scoring
column were Pres Cash and
Jasper Nicholson. They were
allowed only 9 points between
them by the rugged Warrior
defense.
Once again, the Chattooga
girls fell to bitter defeat. This
time 66-44. Susan Head led the
Chattoogans with 10 points,
Mamie Clarkson scored 8, and
Kia Evans hit for 6 more to
provide the girls limited
offense. The game was domi
nated by Warrior center Jill
Ross who consistently hit on

CHATTOOGA VS.
RINGGOLD
With four players scoring in
double figures and a hard press
ing defense, the Chattooga
Indians buried the visiting
Ringgold Tigers 74-57 Tuesday
night. Andre Hoskins again led
the Tribe in scoring with 21
points. Odell Mosteller hit for
14, Jasper Nicholson sank 16,
and Pres Cash contributed 10
more to the winning cause. As
bared out in the scoring totals,
the Indian victory was a great
team effort. The Chattooga
defense swarmed over the
Ringgold ball handlers each
time the visitors drove into
Indian territory and caused
many turnovers. Odell Mos
teller and Andre Hoskins spear
headed the Chattooga rebound
ing effort and pulled down
more than 25 rebounds be
tween them. Also playing solid
basketball off the bench were
Larry Stamper, Ray von Foster
and Stacy Evans.
Joanna Lanier’s 12-point,
5-rebound effort was far from
enough as the Ringgold girls
crushed the Indians 61-32. The
Indians managed but 7 field
goals on the night while giving
up many easy layups to the
hustling Tigers. Mamie Clark
son scored 7 points, all of
which were from the free
throw line, and grabbed 9 re
bounds to lead the girls in that
department.

Jeff Smith Signs
With Auburn
Jeff Smith, standout performer for Chattooga
High’s football team both offensively and defen
sively, has signed a grant-in-aid to Auburn Univer
sity.
The 6-foot-4-inch, 235-pound offensive tackle
defensive end was signed Saturday at Menlo by
Steve Greer, defensive ends coach at the Alabama
school (Auburn).
According to Greer, “Smith has shown good
movement and hustle all year and we think that
since he played on both sides of the line has a real
chance of making it at Auburn. He is the only
player in this area we were after.” .
Jeff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Smith of
Menlo, started for the Indians for three years.
“He is a good, smart football player, capable
of playing both ways,” head CHS coach Buddy
Windle added.
“Jeff was a real leader for us and he has the
tools to be a fine SEC player with a lot of work on
his part.”
“He has good speed and mobility and is also a
very good student,” Windle said.
Jeff played a lot of this past year with injuries
and constantly had teams running away from his
end position defensively.
He was recruited by such schools as Georgia,
Oklahoma, Alabama, Tech and Auburn as well as
the Naval Academy.
He stated that his decision to go to Auburn
was for their “small town atmosphere and real
friendly, helpful people.”
