SERPENTFOOT SAYS:
You have been taught to
despise the serpent and all he
stands for, but let us examine a
little more closely just what it
is he represents:
1. There is a flag that says,
“Don’t tread on me!” That flag
shows a serpent. He may be
down, he may crawl on his
belly, but there’s a whole lot of
backbone behind it! He’s got
guts! He’s got courage! Are
backbone and courage to be
despised?
2. The medical profession
shows a serpent entwined
around a staff-as its symbols
of hope and healing! Are such
as these to be despised?
3. The Rod (or cane) of
Moses was a serpent. It is the
symbol of “the child that
leads”. It is the symbol of
faith. Is faith to be despised?
4. Ancient men showed a
serpent feeding upon its tail, as
the symbol of that one who is
eternal, and self sufficient,
feeding only upon himself.
They saw rebirth in the
serpent’s shedding of skin and
emerging from hibernation. Is
that which is eternal to be
despised?
5. And searching for food,
those ancients, who could read
wind and sky and animal
tracks, saw a “living word”
written there upon the dust. It
was a serpent. They studied
him, even as they studied the
way of the ants and bees and
all those other animal teachers
of man. We copied them that
we too might learn to leave
messages that “magically”
would speak long after we were
gone . . . that we might learn to
fly as the birds . . . that we
might be as productive as the
ants and bees .. . and that
artificially we might attain the
speed of cheetahs and horses.
But now we, the student, have
enslaved our old instructors,

we feed upon them without
gratitude, and destroy them
wantonly to show our dis
respect that we are grown
wiser, and every way superior
to our old teacher. Is there no
gratitude in man, that he shall
repay such service with hatred
and not love?
6. We reserve our greatest
hatred for the serpent, the
greatest teacher of them all
... for in him we read the tale
of one we shall never conquer,
for as he is all mouth and tail
and belly, we have seen him as
the symbol of Need, The Great
Teacher, that makes us seek
knowledge, Need that makes us
work and struggle, Need that
makes us find courage, hope,
healing, forgiveness, faith and
love. And because he knows
most Need, we saw him as the
wisest of creatures, even as
man so weak is wise when he
attends to the real Need, and
does not allow the false need,
the false god, to enslave him to
gluttony, alcoholism, drugs,
lust, greed, debt, and every
other tyrant. Shall we forever
despise the real Need, and love
that false Need, that false God
that enslaves us?
7. The Jewish-Christian
Bible identifies the serpent
with knowledge (the tree).
Moses identified him with the
cane (faith). Also the Jewish-
Christian Bible makes the
serpent responsible for the
cross (struggle—or the coming
together of opposites—as
symbolized by the wedding
together of the vertical and
horizontal bars of the cross.
You see the same idea of the
marriage of opposites in the
Y in Yang Chinese cross, also in
the American Indian and other
crosses. But tree, cross, or cane
(knowledge, struggle, or faith)
the one symbol of Need, the
Great Teacher, is the serpent.

Shall you forever love the
cross, but despise the tree and
the cane?
8. The Jews that wrote
Genesis, wrote that the serpent
would always bite at the heel
of man, and man would tread
upon the head of the serpent.
This is another version of that
ancient tale of the serpent
feeding upon its own tail, and
also it is the same as the 69
(the Chinese Yin Yang—mar
riage of opposites) where life
feeds upon death, and death
feeds upon life, and creator
and destroyer are wed into the
one being ... for Need gives
birth to all things, and Need
destroys them. It is Need that
makes war upon us. Need is as
a great tree lashing at our heels
to spur us on. And he is as a
cane of faith to tread upon.
Need is the cross we bear.
9. Need is that Father we
have slain. But Need can never
be slain once and for all. Need
is Immortal. And He is that
child born again in our belly,
heart and mind. Need is That
Holy Ghost, our other half, our
‘constant companion, that mate
every man marries and bears
like a cross.
10. The serpent is not just
the symbol of Need, but also
he is the symbol of them not
. conquered by Need ... for
without legs he walks, withour
arms he climbs, he swims. And
he tells of a God that is not
man’s master. For the real
Need does not teach you to
tremble in fear, and does not
teach you to lust after “riches
untold,” does not teach you to
long for a cup spilling over!
The real Need says, “Get
control of yourself! That you
be not enslaved to gluttony,
alcoholism, drugs, lust, greed,
debt, violence, and every other
master.” The real Need does
not place the crown of “divine
right” upon tyrants! He has no
“Chosen People”. Real Need
teaches SELF CONTROL! And
He calls all men equal—equal
from the start—not requiring
any “special dispensation”!
Real Need makes war upon His
children until we measure up
EQUAL TO HIM! So that call
ing ourselves sons of God, we
begin to act like Sons of God!
Not robots, and not whores,
and not slaves!
11. The real Need says,
“Have at me my spn! have at
me my daughter! And whether
I slay you, or whether you slay
me, whichever of us be slain,
shall be reborn in the other.”
You have been taught to
despise that serpent and all he
stands for. And it is easy to
despise Need for He comes
always as Bad News, and in all
His activity there is pain. Being
born, living, and dying there is
pain. But there, also is the
whole of life, the whole of joy,
love, beauty and under
standing.
12. A wise man once said
you should love your enemy as
yourself. And when you find
yourself you will. The prodigal
despises his father, that He is
too hard, and too lowly, not
worthy to be his father! He
likes to think his father is not a
working man. His father was
retired long ago, with riches
laid up for him! He likes to
think he’s “Got it made!”
So he goes off looking for
those “greener pastures”, He
manufactures himself a new
father, one worthy of him, and
it is the false need, the false
god that always looks like
Good News. And the prodigal
forgets who he is. But one day
he learns that that false need,
that false god, is just small fry!
There is one who comes behind
him much greater than he. And

when the real Need comes
upon you you will be surprised
to remember later how quickly
you shoved aside all those
fancy trinkets and baubles,
how easily you laid down that
wine bottle and dropped that
extra slice of bread! That false
need, that false god that ruled
your life, he wasn’t even in the.
battle!
When our forefathers sepa
rated church from state, they
did not do so that we might be
a nation without guidance, but
that a people that desired self
government might not be
harnessed to a horse pulling in
the other direction! That a
people that desired self con
trol, might not again be forced
into obedience to some other
authority!
That false need, that false
god that comes always as good
news, and promises every good
thing, He is a liar that enslaves
man! He cannot teach self con
trol, but forever he builds to a
police state, and to such
tyranny as our fathers fled.
And somewhere amongst all
his fine promises, you shall
find this promise too-that he
shall destroy this great nation,
and this good earth! And he
will do it too, if we follow him,
for already we have seen the
decline and fall of all those
great nations gone before.
My allegiance is not to Israel
nor to Rome! nor to any
future kingdom! But that this
America shall stand and not
fall as those nations gone
before. This dust that I am,
and was, and will be, it is
sacred to me! I will fight to
defend her! And I will give my
oaths, as I give my body, upon
a handful of this American
soil!
Civil rights belong to them
