DEATHS
Mack Bowman, age 63, a
resident of Route 1, Menlo,
passed away Sunday at 1:20
p.m. in a local hospital.
Bowman was born in Cher
okee County, Ala., on Dec. 12,
1913, son of the late John
Bowman.
He was a Baptist by faith
and was a retired textile
employee.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Ruby Bowman of Route 1,
Menlo; mother, Mrs. Fannie
Stansell Bowman of Menlo;
four sisters, Miss Ethel
Bowman of Menlo, Mrs. Joyce
Plunkett and Mrs. Effie
Howard, both of Trion, and
Mrs. Pauline Boyd of Dalton;
five brothers, Roy Bowman,
H. D. Bowman, Romie
Bowman, Neal Bowman Sr.
and Willard Bowman, all of
Menlo; and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday at 2 p.m. from, the
Chapel of Erwin-Petitt Funeral
Home with the Rev. Allen
Ballenger and the Rev. A. A.
Tanner officiating. Interment
followed in Macedonia Ceme
tery.
Active pallbearers were

Ronald Deering, Johnny

Steve Bowman.

Summerville, passed away at
1:45 a.m. Sunday.
Survivors besides the
parents include maternal grand
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall
Hunter of Summerville;
paternal grandmother, Mrs.
Roxie Fowler of Summerville;
three brothers, Donnie Fowler
Jr., Steven Fowler and Scott
Fowler all of Summerville.
Graveside services were held
Monday at 2 p.m. from the
Ridgeway cemetery with the
Rev. Bob Meeler officiating.

Mrs. Thelma E. Gaylor, 71,
of Route 1, Lyerly, “Chat
toogaville Community” passed
away at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
She was born in Cherokee
County, Ala., on Sept. 7, 1906,
daughter of the late Benjamin
Elrod and Mary Elizabeth Trigg
Elrod.
Mrs. Gaylor was a member
of Summerville Presbyterian
Church, Walnut Grove Chapel.
She was preceded in death
by two sons, Leon Burl Gaylor
in 1973 and Duane Gaylor in
1975.
Survivors include her hus
band, Doyle Gaylor of Route
1, Lyerly; two daughters, Mrs.
Ernest Hurley of Route 1,
Lyerly and Mrs. Bobby
Woodall of Rome; one son,
Malcolm Gaylor of Summer
ville; four sisters, Miss Gertie
Elrod and Miss Lorraine Elrod
both of Route 1, Lyerly, Mrs.
T. J. Drummond and Mrs.
Claude Bagley both of
Summerville; two brothers,
Wilbur Elrod of Hixon, Tenn.,
and Ralph Elrod, of Summer
ville; eight grandchildren; four
great-grandchildren; and several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Monday at 11 a.m. from
Summerville Presbyterian
Church with the Rev. Curry
Davis and the Rev. Don Elliott
officiating.
Interment followed in the
Summerville Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were
grandsons, Tommy Gaylor,
Randy Gaylor, Tony Gaylor,
Steve Woodall, Mike Hurley
and Charles Wynn.

Mrs. Pauline Berry Hender
son, 86, of 15 Sunset Lane,
Trion, passed away at 2:40
p.m. Friday.
She was born in Chattooga
County on Nov. 20, 1891,
daughter of the late Dallas
Berry and Mollie White Berry.
Mrs. Henderson was
preceded in death by her hus
band, Luther T. Henderson, on
Jan. 2, 1949.
Survivors include four
daughters, Mrs. Bill Battles and
Mrs. Melvin Turner both of
Trion, Mrs. Everene Croy of
Columbus and Mrs. Charles W.
Knight of Fayetteville; three
sons, Wallace Henderson and
Hugh Henderson both of Trion
and Berry Henderson of
LaFayette; one sister, Mrs. Joe
Hayes of Summerville; one
brother, Dallas Berry of Berry
ton; 15 grandchildren; and a
number of great-grandchildren;
one great-great-grandson; and
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Sunday at 1:30 p.m. from the

Miss Mary John Hammond,
60, of 1015 W Central Avenue,
Trion, passed away at 10:20
p.m. Wednesday.
She was bom in Floyd
County on May 22, 1917,
daughter of the late Jim and
Maggie Knowles Hammond.
Miss Hammond was a
member of Trion United
Methodist Church and a super
visor at the Georgia Glove Mill,
Lyerly Plant.
Miss Hammond was
preceded in death by a brother,
DeWitt Hammond.
Survivors include three
sisters, Mrs. Jinnie Lee Payne
of Rock Spring, Mrs. Annie
Ruth Adams of Miami, Fla.,
and Mrs. Amy Jo Petrick of
Hollywood, Fla., and several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Saturday at 11 a.m. from the
J. D. Hill Chapel of Lane
Funeral Home with the Rev.
David Autry and the Rev.
Barry Wilborn officiating.
Interment was in the West
Hill Cemetery.

Hiram Wesley Copeland, 52,
of Atlanta passed away Sunday
afternoon in the Veterans Hos
pital in Atlanta.
He was born in Ft. Payne,
Ala., on Dec. 22, 1924. He was
a veteran of World War II and a
retired medical technician.
Copeland was preceded in
death by his mother, Mrs. Vera
Barkley Copeland, on Dec. 11,
1975.
Survivors include his father,
Luther L. Copeland of Dothan,
Ala.; one daughter, Mrs. Janice
Foss of Florida; one son,
Franklin Copeland of Moultrie;
three sisters, Mrs. Max Cooper
of Summerville, Mrs. Royce
Byrd df Seale, Ala., and Mrs.
Juanita Dykes of Dothan, Ala.;
two brothers, Doyle Copeland
of DeSoto, 111., and Orvin
Copeland of Slocomb, Ala.;
one grandson and several nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday at 2 p.m. (central
time) from Liberty Hill Baptist
Church in Adamsburg, Ala.,
with the Rev. Max Turner offi
ciating. Interment followed in
Adamsburg Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were

Keith, Ludy Copeland, Lee
Copeland and Larry Patterson.

Mrs. Maggie Belle Woods,
54, of Pearl River, La.,
formerly of Lyerly, passed
away in a Methodist hospital in
New Orleans Wednesday at
11:30 p.m. Georgia time
following an extended illness.
She was born Jan. 11, 1923.
She was a member of Lyerly
Church of Christ.
Survivors include her hus
band, Bill Woods; two sons,
Mike and Lynn Woods;
parents, Yr. and Mrs. Roy
Cook of Lyerly; three sisters,
Mrs. Tessie Reese, Mrs. Mary
Pickle and Mrs. Ruth Kirby, all
of Lyerly; two brothers, Bill
and Jody Cook of Lyerly; two
granddaughters, Jill and Nicki
Woods of Pearl River, La.; and
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Friday at 3 p.m. from the
chapel of Poole Funeral Home
in Slidell, La., with the Rev.
Chris Andrews officiating.
Interment followed in a
ceremony in Slidell, La.
Active pallbearers were

Woods, G. C. Pickle, Ronnie
Floyd and Jim Hill.

Mrs. Ollie Carter, age 85, a
resident of Chattooga County,
passed away Tuesday at 8:12
p.m. in a local nursing home.
Mrs. Carter was born in
Alabama on Aug. 6, 1892, a
daughter of the late Alexander
Carter and Jane Smith Carter.
She was a member of South
Summerville Baptist Church
and was a textile employee,
retiring in 1940.
Surviving are one daughter,
Mrs. Ruth Mitchell of Oak
Ridge, Tenn.; two sons, Earl
Rose of Summerville and Roy
Carter of Ft. Worth, Tex.; 14
grandchildren; several
great-grandchildren; and a
number of nieces nephews.
Funeral services will be held
Friday at 11 a.m. from the
Chapel of Erwin-Petitt Funeral
Home with the Rev. A. A.
Tanner officiating. Interment
will follow in Pennville
Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be
grandsons.

Mrs. Tracy L. Hall McCoy,
age 23, a resident of Chicago,
111, passed away unexpectedly
Sunday in Chicago.
Mrs. McCoy was born in
Chattooga County on Aug. 29,
1953, moving to Chicago a few
years ago.
Surviving are parents,
Robert Hall of Chicago and
Thelma Hall of Chicago; one
sister, Connie Story of
Chicago; one brother, Dennis
Hall of Chicago; paternal
grandfather, J. M. Hall Sr. of
Trion; and several aunts, uncles
and cousins.

Student, Teacher Program
The Summerville-Trion
Rotary Club, with Dr. James
W. Ware 111, president, and
Steve Ayers, secretary, will be
the official sponsor of the
Georgia Chamber of Com
merce’s Student Teacher
Achievement Recognition
(STAR) Program in the Chat
tooga County and Trion City
school systems, it was an
nounced this week by William
S. Coles, Executive Vice Presi
dent, National City Bank of
Rome, Seventh District Chair
man.
The local club has spon
sored the county program for
many years.
STAR is celebrating its 20th
anniversary year of recognizing
and promoting academic
achievement, honoring the
teaching profession, and
explaining the merits of the
free enterprise system.

Students and STAR Teachers
were outlined by O. Mitchell
Smith, President, C & S Bank
of Colquitt County, Moultrie,
and Chairman of the Georgia
Chamber’s Education Council.
The 1978 State STAR
Student will be awarded a trip
to Europe by the Savings &
Loan Associations of Georgia
through the Georgia Savings &
Loan League, a SIOOO cash
scholarship by the Atlanta Gas
Light Company, and the STAR
Statuette by the Georgia
Chamber of Commerce.
A European tour, SIOOO
cash scholarship from the
Puritan Chemical Company,
and the “ALF” Statuette pre
sented by A. L. Feldman.
Atlanta, will be the top awards
given to the State STAR
Teacher.
All congressional district
winners and first runner-up
District STAR Students will be
invited to make a week-long
educational STAR Tour of
Georgia as guests of the
Georgia Chamber of Commerce
members throughout the state.
In addition, a SSOO scholar
ship is presented by the
Atlantic Steel Company to first
runner-up State STAR
Student, and the first
runner-up State STAR Teacher
will receive the same amount as
a gift from the Georgia Divi
sion of the L. G. Balfour
Company.
The 10 congressional dis
trict STAR Students will each
receive a SSOO cash scholar
ship, given by A. L. Feldman,
and, from the W. Herschel
Lovett Foundation, a new
SSOO cash scholarship will go
to each of the 10 district
STAR Teachers.
Both student and teacher
district STARs will each be
given a silver tray as a gift from
the Georgia Bankers
Association.
The Summerville-Trion
Rotary Club as local STAR
Sponsor will arrange and
conduct their System Recog
nition Meeting in February
1978, and will subsequently
send their winning Systejn
Student and Teacher to the
District STAR Recognition
Meeting in March.
They will also provide an
escort for their System Student
and Teacher as they attend the
State STAR Banquet on April
20, 1978, at the Regency
Hyatt House Hotel in Atlanta.
To qualify to become a
STAR Student, a student must
be unmarried, a legally enrolled
senior all year in an accredited
public or private high school in
Georgia, and have a scholastic
average for the first semester or
first quarter of the senior year
in the Upper 10 percent of his
or her class.
Students must have taken
the College Board Scholastic
Aptitude Test (SAT), either on
Nov. 5, 1977, or Dec. 3, 1977.
Student’s SAT scores for each
part of the examinations must
be at least equal to the latest
available national high school
average.
A STAR Teacher is selected
by a STAR Student on the
basis of having made the most
outstanding contribution to his
or her academic achievement.
