DEATHS
George Browp
George O. Brown, 61, a resi
dent of 26 Curran St., Summer
ville, passed away Monday, July
16, at 7:15 a.m. in a local hospital.
Mr. Brown was born in Walker
County April 11, 1918, son of the
late William Brown and Martha
Wilson Brown.
He was a retired textile
worker, retiring in March 1979,
and was a Baptist by faith.
Surviving are his two
daughters, Mrs. Marie Rowland
and Mrs. Pamela Whisenant,
both of Summerville; three sons,
Oliver Brown of Trion, Arthur
Brown of Summerville, and
Johnny Brown of Henagar, Ala.;
two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Kinsey of
Rome and Mrs. Pearl Morris of
Summerville; three brothers,
Melvin Brown of Summerville
and Grady Brown of Cloudland
and Walter Brown of Summer
ville; one grandson; three grand
daughters; and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, July 18, at 11 a.m.
from the chapel of Erwin-Petitt
Funeral Home with the Rev. John
Mann officiating. Interment was
in West Hill Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Tony
Kinsey,’Melvin Kinsey, Wayne
Brown, Jerry Brown, James Col
bert and Ron Rowland.
Honorary pallbearers were
Oscar Precise, Ted McNair,
Oliver N. Brown and Manuel
Ellison.
Erwin-Petitt Funeral Home
was in charge of arrangements.
Abb Echols
Abb Frank Echols, of Route 3,
Summerville passed away Tues
day morning in Floyd Medical
Center.
He was a member of Oak Hill
Baptist Chuch. and a retiree of
Geneva Cotton Mill.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Adele Terrell Echols; two
daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Thurman
of Summerville and Mrs. Frankie
Shropshire of Rome; one brother,

Funeral services were held Fri
day at 2 p.m. from Oak Hill Bap
tist Church in Chattooga County
with the Rev. Charles Davis, the
Rev. O.M. Collins, the Rev. Harry
Harden and other ministers of
ficiating.
Flower bearers were Madams
Willie Mae Mostiller, Bessie
Smith, Virginia Shropshire, An
nie Lee Wiggins, Mildred Morton,
and Ruth Jackson.
Honorary pallbearers were
J.V. Thompson, Ben Covington,
Horace Shivers, Evan Scoggins,
Paul Hogue, and Mamon Price.
Active pallbearers were
Charles Foster, Charlie Morton,
L.P. Shropshire, Tom McMichael,
Allen Benson, and Issiah Walker.
Interment was in Oak Hill
Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Willis
Funeral Home of Dalton.
Gladys Walker
Mrs. Gladys Elizabeth
Walker, 63, a resident of Route 4,
Summerville, passed away Mon
day, July 16, at 9:15 p.m. in a
Rome hospital.
Mrs. Walker was born in Chat
tooga County Feb. 22, 1916,
daughter of the late Bence Ward.
She was a retired Glove Mill
worker and a member of Pleasant
Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband,
J. W. Walker of Summerville;
three daughters, Mrs. Mildred
McGraw, Mrs. Yvonne Hammitt
and Mrs. Cathy Cook, all of Sum
merville; mother, Mrs. Maggie
Ward of Summerville; four
sisters, Mrs. Eula Mae Lewis of
Cedar Bluff, Ala., Mrs. Mary
Keith and Mrs. Helen Mann, both
of Smyrna, and Mrs. Robbie
McGraw of Berryton; two
brothers. Berry Ward of
LaFayette and Frank Ward of
Summerville; six grandchildren;
Motorists Slowing
Report Shows
A Georgia Department of
Transportation speed monitoring
report for the quarter-year ending
June 30 indicates that the state's
motorists are slowing down.
According to the report, only
57 percent of Georgia’s travelers
are exceeding the 55 mph speed
limit.
DOT Traffic and Safety
Engineer Archie Burnham said,
“We're pleased with this
finding.” Previous surveys had
shown that up to 69 percent of
Georgia s drivers were exceeding
the speed limit.

Myrtle Watkips
Mrs. Myrtle Mae Watkins, 75,
of Route 3, Summerville, passed
away Saturday, July 14, at 3:30
a.m.
She was a retired textile
worker and was preceded in death
by a daughter, Grace Smith.
Surviving are her two sisters,
Mrs. Cordie Tapp of Trion and
Mrs. Leona Thompson of Sum
merville; one step-brother, Robert
Crowe of Summerville; one grand
daughter, Mrs. Bob Bennett of
Summerville; and four great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Monday, July 16, at 11 a.m. from
the Chapel of Lane Funeral Home
with the Rev. Johnny Tinney and
the Rev. Bobby Staton of
ficiating. Interment was in
Greenhill Memory Garden.
Active pallbearers were: Fred
Johnston, Bob Bennett, Gary Mc-
Connell, Archie Bennett, Gordon
Wofford and Pete Denson.
