At the Christmas season,
there is always a need for good
foliage plants and shrubs with
berries to cut for decorating
doorways, mantels and for ar
rangements. Now is the time
to plant some of this material
for use in future years.
Remember also that at
tractive “foliage’’ ar
rangements and centerpieces
can provide interest at any
time during the winter.
Another plus with the use of
foliage is that arrangements
usually will last much longer
than cut flowers. Some of the
plants which will be utilized
quite regularly may be
’’whacked on” quite a bit.
Several of those species may
be needed, at least for the first
few years.
Buford, Yaupon, Foster
and Brilliant hollies are ex
cellent for cut foliage and ber
ries. The native American hol
ly is also widely used for cut
ting purposes. Nandina and
Pyracantna are another good
source of red berries.
A much needed pruning at
this season can serve a dual
purpose—shaping the plant
and supplying branches for
decorating. Magnolia,

Photinia, Cherry Laurel, Pit
tosporum, Cleyera, Aucuba,
Manonia and Boxwood are
broad-leaved evergreens that
have good green foliage. The
conifers such as Pine, Cedar,
Arizona Cypress, Cun
inghamia, Hemlock and
Juniper also make fine
material for decorating. There
are a number of variegated’
foliage shrubs in the
Ligustrum, Pittosporum,
Euonymus and Aucuba
varieties that are very color
ful. Among the vines consider
Smilax and English Ivy.
Lower-growing plants such
as Boxwood, Cleyera, Aucuba,
Dwarf Pittosporum and
Mahonia are often used in
foundation plantings. The
taller growing plants can be
used nicely as specimen
plants, in hedge or screen
plantings or as background
plantings. However if you are
planning to do a severe cut
ting back of these shrubs at
the holiday season, it is wise
to plant in a border or
background. Removing large
limbs or branches of shrubs
used as foundation plantings
may leave them disfigured for
several months.
