Church
Holds
Rally
The Summerville Presby
terian Church held its regular
church school Rally Day on
Sunday, Sept. 13. Not only
was this promotion time for
the chil(fien. but it was
recognition day for church
school teachers of the past
years, and for one special
teacher, Miss Florence Powell.
At the church school hour,
children were introduced to
their new teachers. Apprecia
tion Flaques were presented to
the following: to last year's
teachers; to Christian gducu
tion leaders Mr. and Mrs.
Steve Jones; to Mrs. Howard
Pless, for 27 years of con
tinuous teaching in the Begin
ner's Department; to Mr.
2P HenYey, for 17 years as
church school secretary
treasurer; to Mr. and Mrs.
John W. Ellis for their weekly
maintenance of the church;
and to Dr. Herman Spivey for
his leadership and service in
reorganizing the church
school. Then Dr. Spivey
gresented Miss Florence
owell with a corsage of white
Shasta daisies, in appreciation
of her many years of service to
the church and church school.
For 36 years she was teacher
of the ladies’ Evangeline
class; for 15 years she was Bi
ble teacher of the Business
Women's Circle; and for 15
years she served as secretary
treasurer of the Women of the
church. After these presenta
tions, the teachers were com
missioned and charged by the
pastor, the Rev. Carson
Salyer.
At the morning worship
service, Dr. Herman Spivey,
elder and chairman of
Strengthening the Church
Committee, presented Miss
Powell with a plaque in ap
preciation of her long service
“to her church ams to her
God,” adding that ‘‘she has
the longest continuous fiar
ticipation and active member
ship of church school and the
church.” Also, in recognition
of Miss Powell's many con
tributions, the congregation
sang her favorite hymn,
“What a Friend We Have in
Jesus."”
After the worship service,
the congregation continued
and concluded its Rally Day
celebration with a picnic lunch
at James H. "‘Sloppy’’ Floyd
State Park.
TRY CELERY
Celery has only five

So if you are on a diet, try
munching a little celery in
stead of crackers or potato
