STRAWBERRIES
If you have a backyard
strawberry bed, then now is
the time to fertilize the
strawberry plants. Flower bud
formation in strawberries
takes place in a period from
late August through October.

Having an adequate supply of
nitrogen available for plant
growth and development dur
ing this period, therefore, is
extremely important. A top
dressing of nitrogen to
stimulate growth during this
period is in order but don't
overdo it. Too much nitrogen
can promote excessive
vegetative growth at the ex
pense of fruit bud formation.
For small back yard
strawberry beds, total
amounts of fertilizer should be
1- to I'2-pounds of
ammonium-nitrate or 3 to 4
pounds of 10-10-10 fertilizer
per 200 square feet of bed
area.
Water fertilizer into the
soil and keep plants well sup
plied with water during this
very important period of plant
development. The amount of
berries you'll produce next
spring depends on it.
