S. W. Littlejohn celebrated
his birthday anniversary June
11. He and Mrs. Littlejohn
were treated to steaks and all
of the trimmings at Bonanza
in Chattanoooga, Tenn., by
his children Friday evening,
shomng at Richway, then on
to e Winnepesaukah. He
was also treated to a fried
chicken dinner Sunday along
with strawberry cake and ap
ple pie. Homemade ice cream
was enjoyed in the afternoon.

several gifts also.

Mann Named
The United States
Achievement Academy an
nounced this week that Kancy
Mann has been named a 1982
United States National
Award winner in
mathematics.
Miss Mann, who attends
Trion High School, was
nominated for this National
award by Charles Miller, a
mathematics teacher at the
school. Miss Mann will a pear
in the United States Acfixeve—
ment Academy Official Year
book, published nationally.
The Academy recognizes
less than 5 lEm'cent of all
American igh school
students. The Academy
selects USAA winners upon
the exclusive recommendaticn
of teachers, coaches,
counselors or other school
sponsors and upon the Stan
dards for Selection set forth
by the Academy. The criteria
for selection are a student’s
academic performance, in
terest and aptitude, leader
shig\ qualities, responsibility,
enthusiasm, motivation to
learn and improve, citizen
ship, attitude and cooperative
spirit, dependability and
recommendation from a
teacher or director.

Soil Volunteers Needed
Thousands of volunteers
are needed to help battle soil
erosion and other natural
resource flroblems, Peter C,
Myers, chief of the U.S.
Degartment of Agriculture's
Soil Conservation Service,
said today.
“Soil erosion is one of the
most serious problems facing
America,”” Myers said. ‘‘Peo
ple who will volunteer their
time and talents to help. the
Soil Conservation Service and
local soil and water conserva
tion districts can Put more
conservation on the land while
keering federal costs down."”

— conservation education
programs in schools, churches
and clubs;
— training of high school,
vocational and agricultural
students for soil and land
judging contests; and
— building or making use
of outdoor learning areas with
schools, scouts, and other
groues.
“Volunteers won't-be said.
but they will find it satistying
and interesting work,”” Myers
said. "Tl;?' would not be con
sidered federal employees, but
they will receive legal protec
tion as well as insurance for
any work-related injuries.
Lack of such frowction has
discouraged volunteer service
in the past.
“Volunteers won't be used
to disglace current employees
of USDA; we need all the
trained conservationists we
have,” Myers said. ‘‘But
volunteers can help us be
more responsive to local needs
without adding staff, and they
can help free up more time for
field emf)loyees to work direct
ly with landowners on solving
conservation problems.”’
