the children home is good enough. I'll be
Social Security age next September and
the future is getting much shorter.
Humor is the best antidote for hate
there is, at work, at play, or even in
religion. Father’s Day is no exception, A
certain wife was known to be the cham
pion nagger of sleepy holler. She gave her
husband two ties for his Father’s Day
gift. The children were coming home so
the husband picked up one of the ties and
put it on for dinner. She gave him one
glance and said in a cindery voice,
“What's the matter, didn't you like the
other one?”’
Memories of this day can go back the
other way, too, that can cause a warm
feeling to your insides. Both my
daughters were small when their mother
bought each of thein a toboggan cap to
keep their ears warm in the winter when
they played outside. At first, the caps
weren’t appreciated and 1 would say,
“How pretty you look ... I wish I had a
toboggan to wear on my head.”
The girls became fond of the caps, so
much in fact that they would not leave
the house without them. Quite often, the
smallest would sleep while wearing hers.
The very next Father’s Day, each of my

Let us go now and prepare for
Father's Day. Take some flowers to his
grave if you wish, or give him socks, ties,
shirts and candy, and a great big old hug
would sure come in handy. It is a truly
rich father who has children to run into
his arms when he is broke. Happy
Father’s Day, fathers.

Letters To The Editor
Old Timers Long Remembered
Dear Editor:
The M&M Cafeteria closed its doors
recently, a sad occasion for the many patrons
over the i;ears who have met there to eat and
greet their friends.
Under the management of Joe and Sara
Pless the M&M became an institution in Sum
merville. It was exciting to watch Joe make up
biscuit dough or pie crust and make
homemade pies, as well as cook the other
delicacies. Also, Sara’s salads, such as man
darin orange and blueberry, were the best I've
ever eaten anywhere,
Lawyers, judges, doctors, psychologists,
psychiatrists ate there along with the rest of
us. Court days saw lines out into the streets.
The M&M was therapy for me. One of my
doctors told me when I felt like I needed to get
out, to ‘‘get out.” I would go to the M&M and
eat breakfast or drink a cup of coffee and yak
with my friends.
The late Woodrow Egry was one of the
best patrons of the M&M. He most always
went to breakfast on Thursday morning when
The Summerville News, of which he was
editor, came out. He would sit and drink his
coffee and eat his ham and eggs and irits and
biscuits and jelly and look out over the sea of
25 or 30 open papers being read by early
risers, and it was a delight to him.
Business was transacted there and con
tacts made as well as it was a family-type
friendship.
Sometimes I would go to the M&M and
hobnob around and give Woodrow a list of
leads for news articles and feature stories that
Rodeo Slated

would almost overwhelm him.
Gone but not forgotten are the prices, too.
I remember getting a meat, two vegetables, a
corn muffin or two, a salad, a piece of pie and a
cup of coffee for $1.50.
I like the fact that you could get a bowl of
oatmeal or a bowl of cornflakes if either cash
was low or E;:etibe slim.
Joe and Sara were succeeded by a number
of nice couples and others, the Daniel
DeGideo, the Grady Bryants and the Leon
Gardeners, to name a few. They served good
food, but somehow it wasn't the same and the
M&M “‘Family’’ began to break up, and then
finally close.
Since I still need to follow that doctor’s ad
vice and ‘‘get out,"” and since I haven’t driven
for sometime, I looked for resources in my
community, and found Calhoun'’s (restaurant)
and Palmer’s (country store). I am also sup
posed to walk so I put in about two or more
miles a day troumpixfi to these two glaces.
Betty and Robert Calhoun and Randy are
goody cooks, and the Palmers and their
customers are nice; in fact, so nice to me that I
was invited to sweep the floor the other morn
ing.
gWe all need friends and to see our friends,
and I fiess everybody has adjusted to the
M&M being closed, and it is no shock or
anything, but it is still sad, and being an op
timist or a Polly Anna or whatever, I reserve
the ho?e that some day Summerville will have
a nice family-type restaurant again, preferably
a cafeteria.
