SCUBA DIVING
CLASSES SCHEDULED
_ The Summerville Recrea
tion Department is offering
scuba diving classes. Classes
will be conducted each Mon
day from 6 dp.m.-lo p.m. begin
ning Monday, June 28, and
continuing for six weeks.
John Merrin will be the in
structor for these classes.
Merrin has been scuba diving
since 1976 and is a YMCA cer
tified diver, along with ratings
from two internationally
recognized agencies, the Pro- |
fessional Association of Div
ing Instructors (PADI) as an
Open Water Instructor and
Scuba Schools International
(SSI) as an Advanced Ofien
Water Instructor. He has
taught students at the Rome
YMCA pool, Summerville
Recreation Center along with
Brivate classes in Rome and
edartown.
The scuba class consists of
a minimum of six to four hour
classes and each student must
be able to pass a basic swimm
ing test. Books and
workbooks are to be supplied
by students along with mask,
fins and snorkle. Audio Visual
aids are used during the
classroom sessions to help
students during classroom
and pool sessions. Tanks,
Regulators, etc., are supilied
by instructor until checkout
dives are to be made.
At the end of classes, there
will be a simple written exam
and then a certification dive,
grobably in Florida. Don’t
uy any equipment before
coming to class. Cost of class
is $85.00. Pre-Registration 18

Menlo Major League Court
The Menlo Dixie Youth Major Leafiue queen and court
were selected Monday evening. The queen was Ellen
Thompson (not shown). First runner-up was Rhonda
DeKarske (left) with Robin Bolden (right) as second
runner-up. Last year’s queen Chris Hall (center) did the
crowning.
Contest Is Planned

society will once again spon
sor the Daniel Whitehead Na
tional Poetry Awards, featur
ing SSOO in cash prizes in a
contest Oct. 16.
Deadline for entry is Sept.
30. Each contestant will pay a
$5 entry fee for the first poem
and $1 for each additional
poem.
