In a message to VA
employees, Administrator of
Veterans Affairs, Robert P.
Nimmo said: ‘“All Americans
should recognize the debt we
owe our felf([)lw citizens who,
while serving the Nation, were
imprisoned by the enemy. We
should not forget the
unresolved casualties of war
— those who are still missing.
Their families, relatives and
friends still wait, not knowing
the fate of their loved ones.”
In Washington, Recogni
tion Day ceremonies will be
held at the Pentagon, hosted
by the Defense Department.
The Prisoners of War
Health Care Benefits Act of
1981 fives former POWSs
special priority for VA
medical treatment. For com
pensation claims, it also
reduces the required period of
confinement for certain
diseases associated with
prison camp internment from
six months to 30 days.
According to T. R. Whire,
Director of the Atlanta VA
Regional Office, any former
POWs living in Georgia who
have questions about their
benefits can discuss the mat
ter with a Veterans Benefits
Counselor by calling toll-free
1-800-282-0232.
In the 12-month period
that ended Sept. 30, 1981, VA
hospitals treated 4,553 former
POWs.
