Fall Gardening A Possibility
%y JAMES M. BARBER
xtension Horticulturist
When thinking of garden
ing, many people don’t think
past sprin%:r summer. There
are a number of cool season
crops, however, that can ex
tend the gardening season
considerably.
In most of Georgia these
cool season crops can be
grown in early fall and late
spring but in South Georfia
many can be grown in late fall
and earlly; spring, and a few
can withstand most South
Georgia winters.
By careful filanning g'ou

Bothersome Plant
Found In TVA Lake
Hydrilla, an aquatic plant
considered extremely damag
ing to lakes and streams, has
been found for the first time in
a TVA lake and an emergency
grogram to eradicate it has
egun.
The weed, which spreads
rapidly and can form nearly
inpenetrable mats of stems
and leaves at the water’s sur
face, was found by a TVA
boat crew Thursday, Aug. 19,
gowing on the right bank of
untersville Reservoir near
the Bellefonte Nuclear Plant.
Floatinfg pieces of the plant
were found upstream, in
dicating it may also have
become established farther
upstream.
The threat of hydrilla, an
exotic foreign species, has
long been of concern to TVA,
which hailpublished warnings
for several years asking la.fie
users to be on the lookout for
it. A TVA brochure on
hydrilla says the weed in large
infestations can make swimm
ing, boating, fishinF and
water skiing difficult and
dangerous — or impossible.
After botanical tests last
Friday confirmed that the
discovered plants were
hydrilla, TVA intensified
surveillance activities to
determine the extent of the
plant’s growth. Surveillance
efforts in Guntersville Reser
voir are expected to be
hampered initially by turbid
water conditions and high
flow following recent heavy
rains upstream.
After the density and
range of distribution of the
plant are determined, treat
ment using the a?uatic her
bicide endothal will begin im
mediately.
Hydrilla was first found in
this country in 1960 in Florida
where it has since infested
more than half a million acres
of lakes and rivers. It spread

ARE PRIMARY TEETH IMPORTANT?
Want to make your dentist
cringe? Tell him not to waste
his time on your child's
severely decayed tooth
because, “It's only a baby
tooth and he's going to lose it
anyway.”
Don’'t kid yourself!
Primary teeth (a much better
phrase than ‘“baby teeth”)
play a very important role in
the development of a child’s
future dental health. Obvious
ly, they are necessary for
chewing. Even more impor
tant, primary teeth create the
proper spaces for permanent
teeth. A primary tooth that is
permanently lost can no
longer do this job. The teeth
nearby will crowd into the
empty space, and when the
follow-on permanent tooth
tries to enter there may be no

season crops as are needed for

vegetables. Test you soil to
determine fertilizer and lime
needs. If the pH is below 6.0
to 6.5, afi'ply lime to adjust the
pH to this range. If the pH is
too low, nutrients are tied up
and the crc‘)jps do not flow as
they should. To get the most
efficient use of fertilizer, place
a portion in a band two to
three inches beside the seed or
plants and sli%htly below seed
or root level. Subsurface ban
ding establishes the roots
quickly.
Apply the remainder of the
fertihzer as a side dressing
during the growing season.
After cooler weather comes,
don't apply too much nitrogen
at one time or the plants may
have a flush of growth if the
weather warms up for a few
days and then be more suscep
tible to cold injury. Use a
premium grade of fertilizer
containing minor elements
such as boron and

urn soil deep to provide a
good loose environment for
the root system to grow. If
good, clean organic matter is
available, work it into the soil.
To have plants of the varie
ti; wanted when you need
them, buy seed and grow the
plants yourself. This does not
re?uire a lot of time and pays
off by having good plants of
recommended varieties. Buy
good quality seed of varieties
that are adapted to the area.
Water as needed to get a
stand and keep plants grow
ing. Do not over water; ex
cessive watering can be as
damaging as not watering.
Control weeds, insects, and
diseases before thei\l' cut yield
potential. Visit the glarden
regularly and look for disease
or insect problems. Carefully
check both the top and under
side of leaves for any pest pro
blems. If Froblems are found,
your local county Extension
office can help you identity
ard treat them.
If further information is
needed on g‘rowing your cool
season garden, contact your
local county Extension ogice.

may come out in the wrong

Prompt treatment with a
