REMOVE FLOWERS FROM
NEWLY-PLANTED
STRAWBERRIES
Strawberries glanted this
spring need all the help the
can get to become estabfisheci
One of the things you can do
to help them out is to remove
the flowers this year. Other
wise, fruit {Jroduct,ion this sglr
ing wil weaken the
unestablished plants and they
won't perform well in future
years.
Properly cultured
strawberries of good varieties
planted this spring that have
their flowers removed can be
expected to produce heavily
next year and in future years,
provided other cultural prac
tices are carried out.
POOR FRUIT SET
ON APPLES
A lone apple tree in the
backyard planting may pro
duce very few, if any, fruit.
This common problem is
generally due to inadequate
pollination. Most apple
varieties require cross
;lx)ollination (such as Red
elicious) which means a se
cond variety having viable
gollen must be planted near
y. Some varieties produce
non-viable pollen, such as
Staymen Winesap, which is of
no value for polgnizing itself
or other varieties. A few
varieties are self-fruitful, such
as Golden Delicious, and will
set a crop when planted alone.
Where this problem exists,
the homeowners can consider
several remedies: (1) Plant a
second tree which will provide
cross-pollination; (2) Graft or
bud a pollinating variety onto
the existing tree; or (3) Place
bouquets of a good pollinator
in containers of water within
the tree; (Bouquets consist of
large branches with some
