Elderly And Disabled
Are Easy Crime Targets
“Criminals often tPrey on
the elderly and disabled
because their lifestyles may
set them up as easty crime vic
tims,"'' says Sheriff McConnell
of Chattoo‘fa Coun&y.
The elderly and disabled
are physically, psychological
ly and many times financially
vulnerable targets. In 1977,
almost 700,000 of our nation’s
senior citizens were victims of
serious crimes. Most of these
were crimes for financial (Fain.
as the elderly and disabled are
easy victims for burglars, rob
bers and purse snatchers.
If confronted by an
assailant, victims should sur
render their valuables to pre
vent further personal harm,
Emergency numbers should
be kept handy at all times.
Over halfy of the crimes
against the elderly and disabl
ed are never reported and
criminals are left free to vic
timize others. Reporting
crimes is vital for your own
grotection as well as for reim
ursement by insurance agen
cies and income tax reduc
tions.
Elderly and disabled per
sons should protect
themselves by practicing the
following safety tips:
* Remember that there is
usually safety in numbers.
* Avoid ({ark or deserted
backroads.. Don’t stop near
parked cars or near large
groups of adolescents,
especially males.
