Tips For Town And
Country Living
By Ted Clark-Extension Agent
REMOVE FLOWERS FROM
NEWLY-PLANTED
STRAWBERRIES AND
BLUEBERRIES
Strawberries and blueber
ries planted in late winter and
early spring need all the helr
they can efiet in getting well
established. It is especially
important that the strawberry
blossoms be removed so that
all the plant’s energy can go
into producing daughter
plants or runners for next
year'’s crop. Failure to remove
these blossoms delays produc
tion. Late produced runners
are often weak and will not
produce large berries.
Blueberry plants, whose
flowers have not been remov
ed, will not get off to a good
start. The drain of producing
fruit the first season after
planting will decrease
vegetative growth and delay
the maximum productive
years.
RESIST IMPULSE
BUYING OF
FRUIT PLANTS
Garden centers and
nurseries often have clearance
sales on fruit trees and vines
in April. It is getting late to

often respond poorly; if they
survive at all.
Pre-planning is 50 percent
of the requirement to produce
fruit at home. If I\"’ou want to
have a fruit planting ask
{)ourself these ooguestions: 1)
o I have a g sunny spot
with well-drained soil? 2) Is
this space large enough to ac
commodate the ?lants I wish
to grow? 3) Can I take care of
the pest control and other pro
duction practices necessary?
4) What are the best varieties
for my area?
If you cannot answer these
questions you will be better to
l(iave the growing to someone
else.
