The need for emergency
medical identification that can
provide immediate access to
the vital information needed
to properly begin treatment is
great. In the afore mentioned
cases the on-person presence
of an alertin%device such as a
necklace or bracelet protects
both the hosgital andp patient
against the threat of improper
treatment,
“Our research shows that
there are approximately 40
million Americans who have
one or more hidden medical
conditions,”” said Hodder.
““We have a tremendous task
in front of us still. Most people
who have a hidden condition
don't really want to let it af
fect their daily lives., They
‘live’ with it and continue on.
Hodder continued, ‘‘That
about sums up Medic Alert's
purpose — to helg these peo
ple take good care of
themselves by givin§l them an
‘extra edge’ if something does
hapfien and they become one
of the 80 million who have to
be treated in a hospital
emergency room every year."
Medic Alert’s Director of
Medical Affairs * Luther L.
Terry, M. D., who served as
U.S. Surgeon General under
President John Kennedy,
said, ‘“We believe that Medic
Alert membership adds to the
quality of a person's life
rather than detracts from it.”
BACKGROUND
Medic Alert was formed 27
years ago because of a near
fatal accident to a teen-ager.
In the summer of 1953 in
Turlock, Calif., a hl;fh school
student named Linda Collins
cut herself while playing with
an air rifle. Her father and
mother were away from home
so a neiihbor took Miss Col
lins to the hospital for treat
ment.
The attending physician
gave Miss Collins a sensitivi
ty test to tetanus antitoxin in
case she was allergic. Unfor
tunately, she was highly
allergic to the test, went into a
Teen Arrested
For Burglary,
House Fire
A Chattooga County teen
ager has been arrested and
char%ed in connection with a
burglary and house fire inci
dent locally that occurred in
late March.
Authorities identified the
youth as 19-year-old De-
Wayne Reed of Summerville.
He has been charged with
burglary and arson. He re
mained inisthe county jail
Wednesday without a bond.
According to reports, the
teen-ager was arrested in con
nection with an incident Tues
day, March 22, at the
residence of Gary Paulus on
Robert Street in Summerville.
The Paulus residence was
broken into around 5:30 a.m.
and several items of value
taken before the house was set
on fire, said reports.
Two other fi).i:al teen-agers
were also arrested shortly
after the incident and charged
with the incident.
LOCAL from front page
weeks later,
This weekend, Mrs. Bryant is suppos
ed to see Lilly Bell for the first time in 30
years.
The question the family is asking now
is, where is Madelene? “'I won't give up,”
said Mrs. Bryant, “‘l'll find her. I never
give up."”’
Joy Toles of the Chattooga County
Department of Family and Children Ser
vices has fired off a letter to the Depart-
coma for three days and
almost died.
Her father, physician Dr.
Marion C. Collins, determined
to prevent this from happen
ing again to his daughter,
designed a silver bracelet
bearing the insignia of the
medical profession on the
front with the words, ‘‘Medic
Alert.” On the back was
enfiraved the warning:
“Allergic to Horse Serum,”
the liquid vehicle used at the
time for tetanus antitoxin.
Convinced that bracelets
or necklaces with medical
messages could help save lives
and speed treatment in
emergencies, Dr. Collins in
vestigated the feasibility of
establishing a nonprofit,
charitable organization to pro
vide a lifeline to those who
might be unable to ask for
help in critical situations. He
surmised that people with
medication allergies, diabetes,
hypertension, heart problems
and myriad others with
medical problems could find
themselves in situations
where improper diagnosis and
treatment might cost them
their lives.
After years of Elanning
and consulting with fellow
?hysicians, nurses, law en
orcement agencies and na
tional leaders, Dr. Collins
