Letters To The Editor
Tired Of Criminals Getting Off Light
Editor,
I cannot believe there has been so little
public reaction to the recent life sentences
passed in area court convictions, that clearly
deserved the death penalty. I beljeve that peo
ple in general have lost tg,e feeling of respon
sibility to do what is right, no matter fiow
unpleasant, because it is one's duty.
I doubt that anyone cares how {feel about
anything, but as a taxpayer, I figure my opi
nion is as good as the liurors who recommend
ed life — without parole for Judith Neelley. Is
there no crime heinous enough to warrant the
death penalty, anymore?
There was an article in the Chattanooga
Free-Press that prompted this letter. It befis
that Mrs. Neelley plans to divorce her hus
band whom she “still loves but doesn’t want
to be with anymore.” What I want to know is;
are the taxpayers going to foot the bill for this
too? Why does she feel she needs a divorce?
Does she plan to marry again or does she feel
if she can beat the death per.alty she can also
beat the life sentence? I understand the tax
payers have already seen that she had the
comforts of home and better medical attention
than most of us can afford during her jail stay
and the birth of her child. I'm sure much bet
ter than her husband could have provided.
We have seen in the papers t?\at it takes
one million dollars to keep one 18-year-old in
prison for life.
Now how many taxpayers will even earn
one million dollars in his lifetime much less
have that much personally to sg}end for his
own personal maintenance? If he is luckfi
enough to earn one million dollars, how muc
sos taxes will go to the upkeep of all the
Neelleys and the Mansons or the like?
People don’t want to be responsible for tak
ing another life, but how many lives are they
really taking by creating a condition where
criminals and murderers have nothing to fear?
Certainly not paying with their life. As a mat
ter of fact some Kave it better in jail than out-
Offers Thanks
Dear Editor:
I would like to take this opportunity to
thank the band parents and bango supporters
of Chattooga County for their outstanding
contributions this year.
The Booster Club officers, concession
workers, fruit distributors, Follies’ par
ticipants and merchants have all aided the
band students this year and in the past. The
school administration and faculty members as
well as Mr. King and the Board of Education
have all shown immense support for the band

side. If jails were so terrible there would not
have been so many repeat offenders. Most of
the crimes are committed by }geople who have
already committed crimes. People who just
made a mistake are going to learn from that
mistake and they are going to do whatever it
takes to stay out of jail. Criminals are people
whose perverted minds think they are not
bound by the same laws as you andy I. Maybe
some could be rehabilitated to live in society,
but are the odds worth the money spent to
that effect? It's the same society you and I
have to live in, I'm sick and tired of hearing
“criminals rights.”” What about victims
rifihts? What about your children and mine,
who shouldn't have to worry about some
degenerate out waiting to prey on them?
We read in the papers that there aren't
enough jails to hold all the criminals so we are
“ordered’’ to build more and better ones. I
doubt that the ‘‘terrible conditions’’ in many
jails are any worse than a lot of poverty
stricken homes across the country, but the
majority of the people manage to survive
these conditions with decency and a sense of
right and wrong and the ability to live within
the bounds of society without making their
own rules. I don't mind fiaying taxes, but I
want them spent for worthy causes.
For what it costs to keep one life prisoner
how many deprived, deserving, intelligent
children could be educated and trained to %ill a
useful need in society? How many diseases
could we wipe out or how many homes could
we provide for children like Lisa Ann
Millican?
Thanks for letting me get this off my chest.
I am sure plenty others feel this way too, but
like me, are too cowardly to speak up. That's
why I ask you to print only my initials, I'm
afraid some of tfie aforementioned people
might not like what I have said and T don't
count on them staying in jail forever.
Thanks,
E.M.H. .
program.
We are presently making plans to purchase
new uniforms (for our old ones are five to eight
years old) and attend band camp next year.
I know that the students are sometimes
sluggish in demonstrating their appreciation
but I know the program is improving due to
the school, community and parents’ support.
Thank you,
Ron Becton

Cancer Information
Available Locally
Early detection can have a
major impact on the outcome
of treatment of common forms
of cancer. The Chattooga
American Cancer Society Unit
has some specific advice.
“Cancers of the breast,
uterus, mouth and colon
rectum, account for a high
percentage of all cancers. A
regular physical checkup is
the first way to set the scene
for early detection. In addi
tion, there are special techni
ues and tests that can help
3etect them at an early
stage,”’ Ovelle Thomas, Chat
tooga County ACS Public
Fducation Chairman said.
‘‘Mammography is recom
mended for any woman with a
suspicious breast change. It
should be part of routine care
for all women over 50, an age
group at high risk of develop
ing breast cancer. Mam
mography also is essential for
women under the age of 50 if
there is a family history of
breast cancer in either mother
or sisters. A woman who has
had breast cancer in one
breast should have her other
breast examined by X-ray on a
regular basis,”’ she said.
Another common cancer in
women — uterine cancer —
can also be detected in an ear
ly curable stage through
checkups, including special
tests. Actually,’ Mgz
Thomas said, ‘‘uterine cancer
occurs in two forms: cervical
cancer, which occurs in the
neck-like opening of the
uterus; and endometrial
cancer, which is cancer of the
lining of the uterus.”
Cervical cancer is detec
table even before symptoms
appear through the quick,
painless Pag test which can be
done in a physician’s office or
clinic. Every woman, from the
time that she begins sexual
relations, should have a Pap
test on a regular basis. The
Pap test is less accurate in
detecting endometrial cancer.

Women most likely to develop
this form of uterine cancer —
primarily women over 40 —
are advised to have physical
checkups on a regular basis
and any special diagnostic
tests suggested by her physi
cian.
“In addition, women of all
ages should make it their
business to speak with a
physician in the event of any
unusual bleeding or discharge.
This usually will not mean
cancer, but it is important to
have a professional diagnosis.
If cancer is present, it is in
valuable to find it and treat it.
For example, the overall cure
rate for endometrial cancer is
75 percent; but, when the
disease is diagnosed in an ear
ly stage, there is between 80
and 90 percent chance of
cure!”’
