The hiring of teachers and
adopting the 1983-84 school
calendar were the highlights
of the Monday night meeting
of the Chattooga County
Board of Education.
The board aprroved the
coming school calendar with
Aug. 22 as the first daK'l of
school for students and May
30 as the last day of school for
students,
The school holidays will be
as follows: Labor Day, SeRJt. b;
teacher work days, Nov.
17-18; Thanksgiving, Nov.
24-25; Christmas, Dec. 19-Jan.
2; teacher work days, March
l-g: and spring holi(g,ays. April
2-6.

In other action the board:
* Amended the 1982-83
school calendar due to missing
a day because of snow recent
ly. The board approved June 2
as the last day of school for
students this year.
* Discussed various,junior
high schools to visit during a
two-day tour while getting
ideas f)(,)r a local new junior
high school building.
* Briefly discussed the
usage of propane by the
school buses. According to
records being kept on several
buses using propane and
several using gasoline, the
gasoline buses were getting
better mileage. No action was
taken on the matter.
Benefit Singing
Planned
A benefit singing for Camp
Hamby will be held Saturday
at the Menlo Elementary
School gym beginning at 7
p.m.
Admission to the singin
will be $2 for adults witfi
children admitted free.
The featured singers will
include: Ricky Woods and
family, Sounds of Grace,
Georgia Crusaders and Mayo

Hartfine attended Secretary
of State Max Cleland’s *‘ Alive
Day,”” a celebration that
marks Cleland’'s wounding
April 8, 1968 in the Vietnam
War.
Hartline, who lis a
decorated veteran from the
Vietnam conflict, attended the
celebration with his wife,
Patricia.
The Walker County Tech
instructor used his recent spr
ing break to visit with his war
buddies from 1968 and 1969.
He visited with Steven Rice of
Jasper, Ala., a buddy he last
saw when lifting him on a
helicopter after he was wound
ed in g.ept,ember 1968.

Decatur, Ala., where he saw
his ex-platoon leader, Lt.
