Detecting Cancer Is
Worth The Trouble
If anyone in Chattooga
County has any doubts about
the importance of earl¥ cancer
detection Ovelle Thomas
Public Education Chairman of
the Chattooga County
American Cancer Society is
eager to end them.
‘““Cancer is a disease
characterized by uncontrolled
growth and sgread of abnor
mal cells. If that disease pro
cess is stopped when the in
itial cancer is small and con
fined to the organ where it
began, the chance of cure is
good. If physicians are asked
to treat a cancer in an advanc
ed st.aie. when it has spread
throughout the body, treat
ment may be extremely dif
ficult,” she said.
Early detection, however,
depends on the people — not
just ¥hysicians.
“To illustrate that point,”
she said, ‘“let's consicfe(:' the
cancer no one talks about —
colon-rectum cancer. Some
102,000 new cases will be
diagnosed this year; and,
despite a high death rate, the
potential for saving lives from
this form of cancer is greater
than for most other types of
cancer.
“We know that more than
90 percent of the people who
get colon-rectum cancer are
past 40. This means that both
men and women in Chattooga
County who are over 40
should know the importance
of ref)orting any change in
bowel habits to a physician.
They also should l‘;e having
regular physical checkups in
cluding certain special tests.
“One of the better-known,
but perhalps least favorite ex
am, is called a procto. It is an
examination of the colon and
rectum by means of a lighted,
hollow tube-like instrument.
This exam may be embarrass
ing to some folks, and it may

was deemed a success, accor

“It was such a pleasure to

As a result of the cooking
school, Gene Hurley’s Food

substitutes, such as Vegalinks
(vegetarian hot dogs),
Vegeburger (vegetarian ‘‘ham

Wham (similar to ham),
Steaklettes (similar to steak),

be somewhat uncomfortable,
but it is worth doing. A procto
enables a doctor to actually
see the inside of the colon
where most bowel cancers oc
cur. Suspicious tissue can be
removed for further analysis
under the microscope and cer
tain pre-cancerous growths
removed before they can
cause trouble,” she said.
A screenin% procedure that
helps in early detection is call
ed the guaiac test for hidden
blood. ’Fll\lis test involves put
ting a tiny stool sample on
specially-treated paper slides,
and can be done in a physi
cian’s office or clinic or even at
home. The slide is then analyz
ed for invisible blood.
““We estimate that two out
of three colon-rectum cancer
patients could be saved if
their disease were found early
and treated promptly."”
If you are over 40, you owe
it to yourself to have regular
checkups including these im
portant cancer tests. ‘‘We like
to say — we want to wipe out
cancer in your lifetime,” she
said, ‘‘but we need {lour help.
