Management Part
Of Ranger’s Job
Since the thunderstorm
season is here, Ranger Fred
Hall of the Chattooga Count,
Forestry Unit, has some aj’-
vice for homeowners whose
trees get struck bX lightning.
The extent an tgpe of in
jury to trees struck by lightn
ing aprear to be governed by
the voltage of the charge, the
moisture content of the part
struck and the sgecies of the
tree involved. Because the
total damage done to a tree by
a bolt of h'(fhtning is not
always immediately apparent,
a minimum of repair work
should be done until at least
the next growin% season after
the injury. Immediate,
thorough treatment is not
recommended because the
later symptoms may indicate
that the work has been wasted
on a dead tree or one that
should be removed.
Sensible immediate care
might include removal of bad
ly shattered limbs, han%zing
bark and large splinters. If the
surface of the wound is
smooth or can be chiseled off
uickly to a fairly smooth sur
?ace. remove the dead bark
anc})gerhaps treat the exposed
wood with a tree-wound dress
ing to help preserve the wood
and retard fungus infection.
(Tree experts do not agree on
the merits of using wound
dressings).
If tfie damage occurs in
early summer, inject a fast
acting fertilizer, preferably li
quid, into the root-feeding
area beneath the tree and app

nutrients may help the tree
recover from the damage. The
root-feeding area is mainly a
circular band below the outer
portion of the tree's branch
spread. Two to four pounds of
10-8-6 fertilizer can be applied
for each inch of trunk
diameter, measured about 4'2
feet above the ground. Trees
less than six inches in
diameter should receive half
this amount. Place the fer
tilizer in punched or drilled
holes penetrating below the
grass roots.
Wraiping the loosened
bark tightly to the trunk with
burlap or tacking the bark in
place immediately after
damage might help save the
cambium (generative tissues
which produce wood and inner
bark). Covering moist cam
bium with paraffin wax has
also proved beneficial under
certain conditions.

Eye Laser Tests
For Glaucoma
A new eye laser that
represents the latest in
technological progress has
just been installed at Red
mond Park Hospital, accor
ding to hospital administrator
Jeff Dorsey. Called the Yag
laser, the instrument can be
used to cut tissues painlessly
and more safely as well as to
treat certain types of
glaucoma. The Yag fl)aser at
Redmond Park is the third in
strument of its kind in
Georgia.
Yag stands for yttrium
aluminum garnet; it is a
garnet crystal that generates
the laser light source, accor
ding to the eye surgeons on
Regmond Park's medical
staff. Though many types of
Yag lasers exist in incfustry
and research, the eye Yag
laser produces relatively small
amounts of energy for safer
use inside the eye. Eye
surgeons in France and
Switzerland have done the
f)ioneering work with the Yag
aser for the past several years
with the first eye Yag lasers
being brought to the United
States last year.
According to Redmond
Park administrator Jeff
Dorsey, lasers have been used
in the treatment of eye disease
for many years, mainly for
diabetic eye problems and
filaucoma. These diseases,
owever, are treated with the
Argon laser which generates
heat and burns the tissue.
Unlike the Argon laser, the
Yag laser generates very little
heat and will cut transparent
tissue,:
At present the Yag laser
can be used to cut mem%ranes
that commonly form after a
cataract has been removed
with a suction device. '

Housing Surge Sends
Timber Prices Rising
Georgia and Southeastern
forest-land owners are enjoy
ing a rise in timber prices due
to the strong rebound in hous
ing construction, according to
the head of the state's largest
forestry consulting firm.,
Ele¥ C. Frazer 111, presi
dent of Albany-based F & W
Forestry Services, Inc., said a
survey of timber market con
ditions b{ his firm's five
branch offices in Georgia and
Florida and an affiliated firm
in Alabama points to a
definite upturn in sawtimber
rrices. Sawtimber consists of
arger trees used primarily in
the manufacture of lumber.
Frazer's report of increas
ed prices and activity in
timber and lumber markets is
good news for the state's
economy. Georgia is a major
producer of lumber for hous
ing construction — with some
250 sawmills — and has more
than 23 million acres of com
mercial forest, three-fourths
of which are in the hands of
170,000 g(rivate landowners.

that prices of pulpwood,
smaller trees that are used
primarily for fiber by the pulp

followed the upward trend of
sawtimber prices.
‘“Pulpwood usually lags
behind sawtimber in price in

an increase in lumbe:osroduc
