WHAT SHOULD
NOT BE SAID
TO A CHILD
ASKING ABOUT DEATH?
Any kind of fantasy or
fairy tale about death will
eventually have to be cor.
rected or repudiated. Lel's
explore some common fan
tasies:
“She went on a long
journey " This can be inter
preted by the chiid to mean
the person has abandoned
him without saying good
bye. it can further foster the
faise hope that the person
will return some day
“God took him to
heaven.” It God took the
deceased to heaven
because He ioved him, the
child might conclude that
God will take him too! This
reaction can be fearful fora
child to accept and more
than he should have to at
his early years
“She is just sleeping”
This can quickly cause a
chiid to fear bedtime, believ
ing that he will not wake up
when he shouid. Many more
expressions could be in
cluded. The wisest course is
10 answer questions about
death without such cliches
oOr expressions that will
have to be changed or
uniearned. Even if an adult
cannot provide the correct
answer immediately, the
search for an answer
together can often help you
and the child come to grips
with the “truth of death.”

on this important subject,
