Members of the local unit of the American
Cancer Society held a kick-off luncheon
for their educational campaifi'n last week
at The Round Table. April is Cancer
Month, and all residents are urged to
learn the warning signs of the disease and
contribute to the ed%r::ational research of
the American Cancer Society. Liz Abney
tract home programs to pro
vide a positive environment for
youths and to divert them from
detention into community
based programs.
Attention and contract
homes provide family care for
a delinquent or unruly child
during a period of time in
which his or her home is not
stable enough to provide for
psychological and or physical
needs.
The “‘attention” homes ‘Pro

location can be found.
“Contract’’ homes provide
long-term care, usually ?or four
months to a year. The primary
goal is for the youth to assume
more socialf;' responsible
behavior and gain enough
social skills so that he may
return to his own home or
become self-sufficient.
Youth in the attention and
contract home pro%ams range
from ages Bto 16. Each youth
has a worker responsible z)r his
placement. In addition, he is
screened by the local attention
contract home coordinator to*
determine if the referral is ap
propriate. The attention or con
tract home parents will then be
given background information
to decide whether or not the
child will be accepted into the
home.
By becoming an attention
or contract home parent, one
has the opportunity to give the
children something they have
never had: understanding, care,
guidance, affection and a sense
of responsibility. If l§ou decide
to help a child, the Division of
Youth Services will pay $9.73
per day for room and board,
and will reimburse medical and
clothing expenses.
If you are interested in help
in? a child, or would like more
information on the attention
and contract home proFrams,

The hour-long session

In addition to the primary

Darden be%;arn conducting

seven-county northwest
Geoxgia district in February.
“Elected officials must stay
in touch with their consti

work,” Darden said. “'I have
enjoyed the opportunity, over
the sast few weeks, to meet
hundreds of geo%e from
throuqhout the 7th District.”
“I look forward to meeting
the people of Chattooga Coun

the federal government and its
Yolicies. With that information,
will be better able to serve
them in Washington."
RECIPE CHANGES
If you need to modify a
recipe to reduce calories,
sugars or fats, here's advice
from the Georgia Extension
Service. Use fresh fruit
whenever possible. If canned
fruit must be used, select
water-packed varieties, fruit in
its own juice or drain heavy
syrup from canned fruit.
