Urges Class Reunions In °BB
Dear Editor:
In recent editions of The News I have notic
ed that some froups in the countLare plann
ing high school class reunions for this summer.
It occurred to me that this might be a good time
to remind people of the sesquicentennial
celebration which is being planned for Chat
tooga County for the summer of 1988. The com
mission which has been appointed to plan the
sesquicer.tennial celebration hopes to plan
events that will encourage all former residents
of the county to return for a gigantic
“homecoming’ during this celebration. This
would seem to be an ideal time for class
reunions.
I would like to urge graduates of Taylor In-
Thanks Ambulance Service
Dear Editor:
We would like to take this time and opxor
tunity to thank the Chattooga County Am
bulance Service and especially Alma Lewis and
Jimmy Bennett.
On Sunday night, March 16, my husband
started having severe chest &ains. I called Chat
tooga County Ambulance Service and they ar
rived at our home in a matter of minutes. After
Miss Lewis and Mr. Bennett checked my hus
band, Miss Lewis asked me which hospital I
wanted my husband transwed to. I told her
Redmond Park in Rome, because I feel they
have the best heart doctors and coronary unit
around. While in route to Redmond Park
Hospital my husband’s heart stopped. If it had

Disagrees With Guest Column
Dear Editor:
As a member of the National Rifle Associa
tion for the past 12 years, I am writing in
regard to the Guest Column printed in the
March 27 edition of The Summerville News, by
Mrs. Sarah Brady.
Mrs. Brady is entitled to her opinions, but
some of the things she said are clearly not the
facts concerning the National Rifle Association,
law enforcement groups or the Firearms
Owner's Protection Act (Senate Bill 5.49).
Mrs. Brad{ states several various law
enforcement officials sufigrort iun control, but
she left. out the Igart where the rank-and-file
lice and the Departments of Justice and
g‘:easury are vertyhemucb in sup&;)rt of the revis
ed grovisions of the 1968 Gun Control Act. This
1968 Act was and is still being used to entrap
and harass law-abiding gun owners, collectors,
and federally licensed dealers. The revisions of
5.49 which passed the Senate by a vote of 79-15
will protect gun owners from such harassment.
Some of the revised provisions are as follows:
The legal ri‘fht to purchase any firearm from
out of State dealers when the transaction is
legal in both states. (Not as Mrs. Brady stated).
The leial rith to transport unloaded,
“unaccessible”” firearms through states and
communities with prohibitive gun laws.
The legal right to sell personal firearms, free
from prosecution for not having a federal
license.
The elimination of dealers having to keep
records of ammunition sold.
The elimination of firearm record-keeping
with your name registered as purchaser, after
20 *ears.
he requiring of evidence of criminal intent,
before conviction of a federal firearms violation.
This is only a part of the revisions as space
won't permit listing all. As anyone can see,
these revisions will not “gut’ the 1968 Gun
Control Act, but make it much clearer as to the
rights we have as gun owners.
After an investigation of the Bureau of
Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, it was found
that this afifn(a' had taken advantage of the
wording of the GCA of 68 to harass, entrap and
confiscate ordinary gun owners and dealer's
firearms, and not returning the firearms when
acquitted of all charges.

Convicted felons cannot buy their guns in

the NRA getting in step with law enforcement,
they train many thousands of our lawmen in

The NRA is an independent, non-profit

purposes are to L*)rot.ect and defend the Con

reference to the right of the citizen to acquire,

On March 13, the efforts tg(fiain 218 con
fireeaional signatures on the McClure-Volkmer
irearms Owners Protection Act discharge
petition were successful. This number will allow
this vital legislation to reach the House floor
for a vote. Congressional support of the
discharge petition makes it clear the majority
of our nation’s Congressmen are solidly in favor
of reforming the GCA '6B. This was a tremen
§°KZ victory for America's gun owners and the
Controversies, by definition, have more than
one side; conseguently. to present the public
with only one side of a controversy is, bg' defini
tion, to show bias. We have to have a balance.
The citizen being armed does not encourafie
violence, it encourages just the opposite. The
citizen being unarmed encourages violence,
because the criminal can inflict violence upon
the citizen without fear of retaliation.
