This Eroup of pistol shooting enthusiasts
are shown aiming at the targets on the
Chattooga County Wildlife Association’s
new silhouette pistol range. The club has
Shooting Ranges Become
Reality For Local
Wildlife Club Members
A lot of hard, dedicated
work is culminating into a
dream-come-true for members
of the Chattooga Count
Wildlife Association as di?t
ferent shooting ranges are be
ing completed for members and
their guests’ use.
The club’'s skeet range,
started in 1982 was finishef in
October, 1985 and the club’s
?istol silhouette range was
inished in February of this
year.
They also are working on a
rifle range, archery range and
plan for a combat range.
President of the Wildlife
Association is Gene Holt, vice
president is John Espy,
secretary is David Jones and
treasurer is Ron Hill. The
groug has 86 members, 35 of
which are charter members.
The group has a lot of plans
Looking Down The Barrel
for the improvements of their
club grounds near Lookout
Mountain. Theg have a ten
tative program for teachin% in
terested women firearm safety
and use. They plan to fund a
scholarship eacfi {ear to some
young person who enters a
field of wildlife, soil manage
ment, forestry, plant life, etc.
The association was
organized for the purpose of
creating and encouraging an
awareness among citizens of
the need for wise use and pro
per management of those
resources of the earth upon
which the lives and welfare of
men depend: soil, wildlife,
water, forest, minerals, plant
life — and the better protection
and conservation of those
resources.
The local group is affiliated
with the Georgia Wildlife
85 members and is dedicated to proper
management of resources, wildlife, water,
forests, etc. The silhouette range was
finished in February.
Federation, the National
Wildlife Association and is ap-
Rll ing for the sanction of the
RA.
The association also has
plans to build a pavilion,
meeting area, clubhouse, toilet
facilities. When some of these
are completed they plan on a
“?üblic day"” for local citizens
of the county to see what the
association does and the
facilities they offer.
Accordinfi to officials, the
association has only one big
fund-raiser: the Menlo Invita
tional Fiddler's Convention in
August. The convention
features crafts, barbecue, stew,
entertainment and programs.
The fiddler’s are the gest in the
country. The organizers hope
this year to add a jam session
the nifht before the convention
for additional entertainment.
Gene Holt, president,
stated, ‘“We have a lot of in
terest right now. Basically we
are a cross-section of the peo
ple in the county with a com
mon interest.”’
“We plan a range day
cookout for members in April
with Garrett Hayes, a former
Georgia skeet shootin‘%/cham
pion giving a seminar. We have
a trout fishing outing for the
second week in April at the
Lake Burton Management
Area. A fishing trip and fish
fry for the famfiies in May. In
June we plan a club skeet com
petition with prizes being
awarded for teams and in
dividuals. In September we
have tentative plans for a fami
ly lHicnic at the range. October
will feature a rifle range com
petition. November will feature
a pistol silhouette competition.
December will culminate the
year's activities with a
Christmas and BragginF Par
ty for the members. July and
August usuallfy is spent prepar
ing for our fiddler's conven
tion,” Holt added.
A person must be 18 or over
for membership. The prospec
tive member must contact a
member and be recommended
for membership. Antyone who
has been convicted of a wildlife
violation (spotlighting,
Foaching or some other game
aw) is prohibited from becom
ing a member.
The ranlge is open to
members only or their aFu“t
unless there is a special pro
gram planned in which the
public is invited.
