dozer, Travillian crashed

to cut a earthen firebreak
around the blaze.
Jerry Blackmon used a
backfire can to start a secon
dary fire inside the fire ring to
burn toward the existing blaze,
destroying the fuel source,
which is the tinder-dry
winterkill vegetation. The
backfire can contain a mixture
of gas, diesel fuel and used
motor oil.
Some of the fire can range
100 acres or more, making the
use of water prohibitive and
impractical, said Travillian,
Melear, who is in charge of
managing 15 counties in nor
thwest Georgia, said Chat
tootga County has been lucky
so far this fire season. “What
is saving us right now is we
do_nd't have much wind,” he
said.
The wind helps drive the
fire, whipping it up into a blaze
that, if it grows large enough,
will generate its own sustain
ing winds.
Melear surveyed the area
by air Tuesday and said the
Dade County area is the worst
hit. He said more than 300
acres have burned, and most of
the blazes appear to be set by
arsonists.

my daddy in his arms as if he were a baby. He placed him
on a blanket on the ground. The two men didn’t speak.
They just looked at one another. Bull gave a glance around
and then walked down the hill toward his house.
Our family was out on the porch that night. Dad was
laying in the swing. He said he wasn’t hurt bad, just bruis
ed and sore. All of us were quiet, like maybe we were talk
ing to someone above. Suddenly, dad got out of the swing
and told Mama that he had to go to Bull. He walked down
the street toward Patrick’s house. He came back shortly.
and said to Mama, ‘“Bull and his family are gone, and so
are all his things!”
They were seen loading their old strip-down truck by
the neighbors. Bull drove out of their yard with his big
hat pulled half-way down over his ears. A child sat next
to him and his wife, holding a baby, sat on the other side
of the seat. Her mother sat in her rocking chair on the back
of the truck. The Patricks were last seen going down the
pike toward the Georgia line. We never heard from the
family again. |
