PUTTING AWAY
WINTER CLOTHES
An ounce of prevention is
worth a winter wardrom
Warm weather has brought
light weight clothinf. Bl:fi
have you cleaned and sto!
your winter clothes?
Every clothing item should
be dry cleaned or washed
before it is stored. Yes, even if
it has been worn only once.
If you haven’'t cared for
your winter clothes yet, do it
now. Wash all washable items
such as blouses, underwear and
sweaters. For machine
washable items wash and rinse
thoroughly. Don't use fabric
softener in the rinse cycle nor
fabric softener sheets in the
dryer.
For handwashables, wash,
rinse thoroughly and line dry
or let dry flat.
There's no need to press or
iron now. Do it when you take
f:fi clothes out to wear in the
Hang or fold clothes made
of woven fabrics. Always fold
knit garments, especially
sweaters.
When closet space is
limited, chest or boxes are a
good choice. Under the bed
storage is an excellent idea. At
tics are too hot and basements
too damp for seasonal storage
of clothing.
Send dri' clean only clothes ‘
to the dry cleaners. You may be |
able to save on dry cleaning |
costs. Some cleaners have |
“‘specials’” on cleaning in the |
spring. Another option is to ‘
have garments cleaned but not |
pressed, with savings as much |
as 50 percent. Bulk cleaning is |
another cost cutter. This is |
cleaning, hanging on hangers !
and placing in a steam chamber |
with no touch-up or other |
pressing. i
If an{ of your clothes con
tain wool, ask if the dry cleaner
is using a moth proofer. It wilk
aid in moth firotection. But, t&
be sure that you prevent
danger from clothes moths,
you must:
— have clothes thoroughly
cleaned.
— don’t mix with clothes
not washed or dry cleaned.
~— store in a completely
sealed container. This can be a
sealed (Not tied) plastic bafi,
paper wrapping with all
creases and folds taped, or a
closed alfarbage can sealed with
tape all around the lid. Clothes
moth larva can get through a
pin hole! Cedar lined closets
alone are not adequate
protection.
Just as for washable
clothing, dry clean only
garments shou¥d be stored in a
“lived-in"’ section of the home,
not a damp basement or hot at
tic. Constant temperatures %re
vent moisture and other
problems.
