Dear Editor,
I am writing in regard to an article by James
Budd fiublished March 27 concerning TV
evange ists.
I believe Mr. Budd better watch criticizing
God's evangelists. Does Mr. Budd know what
these offerings are used for? He speaks of all
the money they get and the fine homes and cars
the&’have.

U.S. Foreign Policy
It’s obvious to any serious student of
government that 535 politicians can't
direct foreign policy. President Reagan,
right or wrong, can’t lead the nation with
a sure hand if every foreign policy decision
is debated openly in the House and Senate.
That puts decision-making in
Washington in a goldfish bowl, whereas
other nations enjoy the luxury and advan
tage of being able to debate and decide
sensitive issues without the political
posturing, playing for votes and publici
ty of 535 self-appointed experts.
The handicap being faced today by
President Reagan, in his effort to aid anti
communists, dates from the Vietnam era.
President Lyndon Johnson, perhaps
himself misled, nevertheless misled Con
gress. He got the congressional resolution
he needed (Tonkin Gulf) to wage war. He
waged it with restrictions and the result
was his own demise and a divided, confus
ed nation.
The painful legacy remains today and
voices are heard on every side that help

Editor's Note: What do $2 million homes,
Rolls Royces, Mercedes and S3O million amuse
ment parks have to do with Matthew 28:18-19?
Ifin fgct Swaggart’s $2 million “parsonage”’ is
owned by the church, it’s tax-free. Again, the
Rev. Bilf)/' Graham, who I respect, was quoted
as saying: the greed of some televangelists
“brings zgsrepute to the Gospel.” Graham went
on to say: some of the TV ministers’ appeals
for money ‘‘have made chills go ufi my spine”’
Graham, by the way, makes a salary of about
$62,000 annually and receives a royalty on some
of his books, which seems pretty reasonable.
ing our friends in this hemisphere, and op
posing communists, will produce another
Vietnam. The argument doesn’t make
sense; we've been doing that for a hundred
years in Central America. Nicaragua is not
comparable to Vietnam. ”
Congress must get out of detailed
policy-making in the field of foreign af
fairs. No nation can carry on a consistent
foreign policy with any continuity if 535
politicians debate every step and do so
with the special interests of their consti
tuents and various pressure groups very
much in mind.
As soon as the Nicaraguan debate in
1986 is over, the president should propose
legislation modifying the War Powers Act.
Future presidents, Democratic and
Republican, should have the authority not
to involve the nation in war but to act
against terrorism, subversion and military
aggression without in every case opening
a circus-like debate in both houses of
Congress.

Head Injury Hearings
Set Across State
Senator Bill English of
Swainsboro will be conducting
statewide heari;:ss to docu
ment negds of he: il;jured per
sons, and to propose egxsla tion
for needed sgrvfi?es to be fund
ed. The first hearing is set for
April 15 in Atlanta.
Six Chattooga Countians
are head injury patients and
Chattoo%a County has the
unenviable distinction of being
one of the highest areas for
head injuries due to car and
motorcycle accidents.
Persons with head il(lf'uries.
their family, friends and other
professionals are asked to par
ticipate. Hearings are set in
Atlanta, Macon and South
Georgia. They are asked to be
ready to write, call and testify
about their needs.
Facilities are needed in
North Georgia for the treat
ment of head injuries. The
closest one in Georfiia is at
Warm Springs with the closest
follow-up clinic at Columbus.
The units usuallfi have 50 or 60
on the waiting lists.
The hearings are under the
auspieces of the National Head
Injury Foundation, Georgia
Association.
ENERGY MISER
An automatic laundry
washer is not a heavy energy
user. Much of the energy cost
of home laundry goes for
heating the water, say Georgia
Extension Service home
economists.
