Educators from Chattooga
County were delegates to the
16th Annual Spring Conven
tion of the Georgia Association
of Educators (GAE), Georgia's
oldest and largest organization
of professionge:ducators. held
in Atlanta April 11 and 12.

Joe Frank Harris, a niece
representini'l Coretta Scott
Kmx, and Mary H. Futrell,
NEA President, and numerous
candidates for the U. S. Senate
all made apgearances at the
meeting which draws 800 GAE
member delegates from across
Georgia.

National Education Associa
tion member, Christa
McAuliffe, and the initiation of
GAE fund-raising efforts on
behalf of The Christa
McAuliffe American Educa
tion Fund.
A highlight of the conven
tion was the presentation of
the GAE Friend of Education
Award to Georgia Sen. Horace
E. Tate for his many years of
service in the pursuit of educa
tional excellence for Georgia
public schools. ;
As the highest governing
body of the GAE, delegates
representing members across
the state set organization
policies, adopted resolutions
and set GAE's 1986-87 budget.
Delegates also elected col
leagues to represent them in
several GAE offices.
Mrs. Faye Fox, president
elect, from Igalt.on. will take of
fice as GAE president-elect in
July along with Cheryl Sarvis,
a teacher at Garrison/Pilcher
Elementary School in Thomas
County who will become
GAE’s 1986-87 President at
that time.
Outstanding achievements
in several areas were recogniz
ed at the Annual Awards Ban
quet. GAE's Human Relations
Awards and School Bell Media
Awards were Fr’esented by
President Charlie A. Hicks:
winning teachers in the State
Instructional Fair held in con
junction with the convention
were announced. Kay Abbott,
staff writer for The Summer
ville News, received an award
for placing first in the feature
article category for the second
consecutive year.
Janet Wifliams was named
the winner of the GAE/WTBS
TV Teacher Hall of Fame
Award at the banquet. WTBS
s¥onsors this annual selection
of one outstanding teacher in
Georgia and presents the win
ner with a film made of him or
her and students and col
leagues. Williams’ name will be
engraved on a plaque that
hangs permanently in the
State Capitol.
Mrs. Selman, CEA presi
dent, said, “‘l'm very proud to
lla‘:ve represented ourC members
re in ‘Chattooga County at
our statg‘;yfigteting. and we all
have good reason to be proud
of our Georgia Association of
Educators.”
“We conducted the
business of GAE in a profes
sional manner and had the op
portunit&,’ to recognize the
outstanding contributions of
colleagues and citizens to
education,” Selman added.
“This meeting also gave us the
opportunity to see and hear the
hxfih r:gard for GAE held by
other educators, state leaders
and officials.”

Completes
Training
Marine Pvt. Donald D.
Lowe, son of William D. and
the Rev. Peggy H. Lowe of
Lyerly, has completed the In
fantry Combat Training
Course at Marine Corps Base,
Camp Lejeune, N. C.
During the six-week course,
Lowe received classroom. in
struction and participated in
field exercises involving infan
try tactics; the construction
and camouflaie of fighting
positions; and the use of mines,
demolitions and.intra-company
communications equipment.
He is a 1985 graduate of
Lithia Springs High School,
Lithia Springs.
