“Mother Goose” Shares Gift
Feeling that her ability to make stories come alive for
children is a special gift, Beatrice Knight has sEent
much of the past five years traveling throughout
Georgia as “Mother Goose.” Retired after 38 years of
teachmifirst grade in Gordon County, Mrs. Knifht is
thrilled by the reaction of children as she recites classic
children’s stories. ‘I love to watch their faces,” she

Knight gained the rapt atten
tion ofd&re-school tots and
adults alike.
~ *“‘Just how close are you to
Mother Hubbard?,” a five
year-old asked at one school.
‘‘She can make you
believe,” an adult observer
stated with admiration.
Dressed in her beribboned
costume, coniflete with shawl
and bonnet, Mrs. Km;fiht used
her performing abilities to
make each character come alive
for her young audiences at
Summerville Elementary
School and the Chattooga
County Library.

State STAR Student
To Be Announced
The Business Council of
Georgia will announce the 1986
State STAR Student and
Teacher at the 28th annual
State STAR Banquet, to be
held Thursday night, April 17,
at 7 o'clock in the Grand
Ballroom of the Downtown
Marriott Hotel in Atlanta.
The Student Achievement
Recognition Program wus
created to focus public atten
tion on Georgia's outstanding
scholars and the teachers who
were most instrumental in
their academic development.
This year, Business Council of
Georgia xl:nembers and l%czas
sponsors have rec
S?I?AR students anmhers
in hxgln schools across the
state. The high school STARs
conelrete at the School System
level, then the Congressional
District level, and, finally, the
10 district winners comsete for
the single State STAR title,
‘which is awarded at the
Business Council banquet.
John Casxer. an astronaut
with the NASA Space Pro
gram will ‘deliver the
former teacher to share her
storytelling ability on 'a
volunteer basis. Askingeonly
that her transportation be pro
vided, Mrs. Knight has travel
ed extensively in Georgia,
visiting nursing homes, schools
and civic orfi;x:izations.
“Storytelling is God'’s gift
to me and I want to share it,”
she stated.
Durin f-her 38 years as a
first grade teacher in the Gor
don Counta/ Schools, Mrs.
Knight read a story for her
class each day from 11:30 un
til noon. She saved all the old
children’s literature as it was
discarded 13 the schools and
has accumulated hundreds of
books at her home in Calhoun.
Mrs. Knight has been able
to hold an audience and craft a
tale for as long as she can
remember.
“Yl've told stories all my
life,”” she stated. ‘I love to
watch the children’s faces as
they get involved in the story.”
During her five years per
forming as Mother Goose, Mrs.
Knight has visited most of the
school systems in north
Georgia and is often invited to
high schools and clubs for
“Reaching For The STARs”
address at the STAR banquet,
and entertainment will be pro
vided by Sandra Brantley of
Warner Robins, a to%;lten
finalist in the 1985 Miss
Georgia Pageant and a
member of the Miss Georgia
Superstars.

as Mother Goose, she
originated a children's radio
program called ‘‘Aunt Bea's
Storyteller Beatrice Knight made a
s;f':ecml visit to the area Thursday as gart
of National Library Week, sponsored by
the Chattooga County Library. In her role
as Mother (.%oose, Mrs. Kniaérgt presented
story hours at the library and visited the

She is the author of one
published children’s book,
‘Peter Mouse,”’ which is in its
Summerville Elementary School library.
