Loggins-Smith Scholarship
Angela Louise Battles of Menlo is the first recirient of
the annual Joseph E. Loggins-J. P. Smith Scholarship,
established last year through the Rotary Club Trust.
Loggins and Smith created tie scholarship to aid young
geople in Chattooga County and invite other
usinessmen to establish similar academic awards. Miss
Battles is the daughter of Glenda and Wesley Battles

Board Of Education Discusses
Easement At Pennville School

The Chattooga County
Board of Education met in
special session Thursday, May
1, at 4:15 p.m.
During the meeting, the
council approved a right-of
way easement to allow con
struction of a retaining wall
and guardrail in front of the
Pennville Elementary School
on U.S. Hwy. 27. The .ease-

ment is in conjunction with the
widening of State Highway 27
to four lanes through the
county. ¢ :
According to Superinten
dent Don Hayes, the B:nnville
school property will not be
adversegy affected by the
widening process.
In granting the easement,
the board has asked the
Department of Transportation
to install caution lights at the
north and south approaches to
the Pennville school to warn
motorists of the school zone.
The board approved a
make-up day, due to inclement
winter weather. The final day
of school has been changed to
Wednesday, June 4. Teachers
will have post planning days
June 5, 6 and 7.
The board also approved
the 1986-87 school cafiandar.
Pre-planm'ng days for teachers
will begin Aug. 18, with the
first day of school on Aug. 22.

The final day of school is
scheduled for May 29, 1987.
The board toured the new
Summerville Middle School
during the called meeting.
Chester Stewart, of T&C Con
struction Company, told the
board that the new school
would be ready for classes to
begin in August. Light fix
tures, ceiling tile and
chalkboards are among items
beinicurrently installed.
The board also toured the
central storage area of Menlo
School, in response to a req}xest
by system nutritionist Toni
Tutton. Mrs. Tutton has ask
ed that the board consider
moving the food storage facili
jy to the old Summerville
unior High campus in the
future.
The meeting adjourned at
6:15 p.m.

Rotary Scholarships Awarded
Four high school students were awarded scholarshlilrs
Mondal{ during the r’efi:.llar meeting of the Summerville-
Trion Rotary Club. These outstanding students were
selected from numerous applicants. In addition to the
annual Charles Bell Scholarship, awarded this year to
Mary E,. White of Summervifie and Jennifer Marie
Jones of Trion, two newly-established scholarships were
also awarded: the J osepK E. “Bo" Loggins-J. P. Smith
award went to Angela Louise Battles of Menlo, while
the D. L. McWhorter award went to Derek Parker of
