best times for pruninF can easi
l{l be determined by looking at
the stem on which flowers are
produced. In the case of runn
ing or climbinf roses, the
flowers are deve oged on last
year's growth or old wood as it
is sometimes termed. This
should tell lyou that climbir;g
roses should not be prun
before they flower. The best
time for pruning is immediate
fi/ after that first big flush of
owerin%in mid to late spring.
Old established plants need to
be Ymned rather severely. Plan
to leave 3-5 of the healthiest
canes. Remove the older canes
or aay that are weak or crowd
ed. When removing the canes,
cut them back to fround level
or sliihtly above. If the plants
were budded or %afted. do not
cut below the bud or graft
union which is a swollen place
or enlarfiement fairly near the
ground level. Sometimes on
running and bush roses as well,
stems will develop below the
union. The folia%e on these
stems will be different from
that growing on stems develop
inF above the union. Do not
allow those stems developin,
below the union to remain ang
develop. They will utilize food
and water that should be goin,
into the production of desireg
stems and flowers.
