James Dale Willingham, 16,
of Summerville was honored
Monday by the American
Legion Auxiliary Unit 129 and
Mayor Sewellag;sh for his ac
tions in cominf to the aid of a
woman severely injured in an
auto crash Nov. 16, 1985.
Mrs. Kathryn Pledger of
Lyerl{. who is still recovering
from her injuries, stated that
Willingham’s actions saved her
life at the scene of the accident
on Oak Hill Road near Lyerly.
Mrs. Pledger suffered a deep
gash to her forehead, a broken
jaw, and a crushed foot in the
accident. Willingham witness
ed the accident and applied
first aid techniques learned in
school.
“I would have bled to deatl
before emergency help arrived
if James Wnllinfham had not
been there to he P me," stated
Mrs. Pledger. “‘Blood was spur
ting from my forehead every
time I took a breath. James
knew how to stop the bleeding.
He talked to me and recited
scrigtures to keep me calm un
til the ambulance could arrive.”
“There are very few adults
who could keep their com
posure and take action in an
emergency as Mr. Willingham
did,”” stated Magor Sewell
Cash. “The city of Summerville
is proud to have such an
outstandi‘:,g young man as a
resident, We want to recognize
him as an example to all the
young people of Chattooga
County. He used the first aid
that he learned in school to
save someone else’s life.”
" Betty Wilhelm of American
Legion Post 129 presented a
certificate of appreciation to
Willingham, stating that his
actions made him an examele
to the youth of the county. Bet
ty Haney, Seventh District
President of the American
Legion Auxiliary, stated that
the young man will also receive
a district commendation in the
near future.
Mrs. Pledger stated that
she was traveling down the
Oak Hill Road at 3:30 Nov. 16
;vrlxn she lost control of her car
struck ‘a culvert. The car
overturned, throwing her two
grandchildren, Cory, two
months; and Doug, two years,
from the car. Her daughter,
Cathy Buice, was also injured.
The two grandchildren were
not seriously injured.
Willingham saw the acci
dent as he was returning from
deer hunting with his uncle,
Mosley Crye, of Summerville.

Completes
Training

Dalton, has completed basic
training at Fort Jackson, S. C.
During the training,
students received instruction
in drill and ceremonies,
weapons, map reading, tactics,
military courtesy, military
Lustice. first aid and Army
istory and traditions.
She is a 1984 graduate of
Northwest Georgia High
School, Trenton.
