It's a vicious cycle. The victims of child abuse
can, and often do grow up to be abusing parents.
The cost to the victim, and to society, 1s stag
gering. Four out of five convicts were abused
children. The leading cause of death in children
6-12 months of age is physical abuse. Last year,
in Georgia alone, there were 26,000 new reports
of child abuse. It is estimated that many times
that number go unreported. And so the
cycle continues.
It doesn't have to. The Georgia Council on
Child Abuse provides help to potential abusers,

Grocefy stores provide' a
huge variety of convenience
foods — canned and frozen
fruits, vegetables and meats;
frozen dinners; brownie, cake
and pancake mixes; canned
soups and drinks; fiotat,o chips,
soda pop and much more. Over
half the products in the store
are convenience foods in which
some or all of the work has
been done for you.
When convenience foods
were compared to the same
food made at home, 59 percent
of the convenience foogg were
more expensive than the
homemade counterpart. Most
of the more expensive conve
nience foods were frozen, chill
ed or ready-to-serve. Most of
them contained meat, fish or
poultry. Vegetables in fancy
sauce and thaw-and-eat baked
goods were also more exggn
sive than homemade. The
meat, fish or poultry products
averaged about 15 cents more
g‘er serving than homemade.
he thaw-and-eat baked goods
and desserts averaged about
10 cents more per serving than
homemade.
About 13 percent of the
convenience foods cost the
same as homemade. The conve
nience foods which cost the
same were staple items like
corn bread or muffin mix and
pound cake. W
"~ Less than one-third of the
convenience foods cost less
than homemade. Most of these
foods were in the fruit and
vegetable category such as
Pam
plain canned fruits and
vegetables &and frozen
vegetables. The savings,
however, were usually small,
just a penny or two less than
a comparable homemade
counterpart. You usually save
money on cake mixes such as
Angel food and German
Chocolate.

highly processed fruit flavored
drink mixes, boxed main dishes
