Darden Says Walker Dump
Shows Need For ‘SuperFund’
The discovw of a toxic
waste dump in Walker County
?oints up the need for the
ederal Environmental Protec
tion Agency's Superfund tox
ic waste cleanup program, 7th
District Congressman George
“Buddy’’ Darden says.
Darden, who has co
sponsored legislation to l‘l)lro
vide $8.5 billion for Superfund
over the next five years, also
'graised the effectiveness of the
uperfund Program.
“Super und’s reputation
has suffered over the ?aat. cou
ple of years because of the con
troversies within its ad
ministration,” Darden said.
“But the fiency continues to
do an excellent job of cleaning
up toxic waste sites all over the
country.”
The Superfund bill co
sponsored by Darden would be
financed through a tax on
waste-producing industries.
That legislation now is being
discussed in a House-Senate
conference comfmitlt.e% lfollc(:lv;;-
ing passage of slightly dif
ferent bills in each gody.
The legislation backed by
Darden would establish man
datory cleanup programs for
600 sites nationwide over five
years. The House-passed ver
sion would allow citizens to sue
fiolluters when the release of
azardous materials poses an
imminent danger to public
health and calls for companies
to provide information which

After learninfik of the
discovery of the Walker Coun

“Commissioner Ledbetter
assured me that the situation
was under control; that efforts
by the state Environmental
Protection Division to clean up
the dump, and to seek out and
prosecute those responsible for
the dumping, were underway in
conjunction with the federal
