treasures.
The veteran teacher’s ex
planation for 50 years of devo
tion is simple. I like to learn,”
she stated. ‘I had some
teachers who i?:gired me and
when I graduated from Menlo
School, I wanted to teach.
“Hopefully, I have taught
some things that were not in
the textbook,”” she stated.
‘“Some things are better
cauf[ht than talsght."
er standards of fairness,
intt(eigrity and patriotism have
made a lasting impression on
her students, as well as her
sKstem of ?riorities in living:
the home, family, church and
school.
“It is very encouraginfi
when a student comes bac
years later as a fiuarent and
says, ‘I want my child in your
room,” " she said. ‘““Several
garents of very young children
ave been kind enough to say
they hoped I would stay long
enough to teach their
children.”
“The children love her,”
says former student and co
worker SJ'bil Langston. “The
first graders in my class are
saying ‘I wish she wouldn't go,
I wish she could be mg'
teacher.’ She is just so friend
ly and outioing they already
know her. nione who meets
her feels like they have known
her forever.”
Although modern advances
have made the schools more
comfortable and outside
resources more available, the
stress of modern life has had an
effect on the children, accor
ding to Miss Toles.
“I do not wish to sound
nefiative." she stated, “‘But I
believe the thing that has af
fected schools most is the
dramatic chanfe in homes over
the last few decades. The in
stability of a great percentage
of homes has resulted in
children coming to school with
all kinds of problems that
hinder the learning process.
Children have emotional gro—
blems that they cannot deal
with.
“There is no simple answer.
We've gotten away from the
value systems of home and
church, and the Biblical
teaching of self-discipline and
self-control. Yet, we have many
wholesome children who do
wantMto learn. 5
& younger colleagues
and I g’ave found that we see
things alike, so I don't feel like
my perspective on the students
has changed because of my
age.
Despite the comgh’cations
of modern life, Miss Toles still
enjoys her students.
“I love to help children
learn,” she says with an ever
present smile. ‘‘When the
children are interested and
want to learn, it's a freat
pleasure to teach them. I like
to see children enjoying
themselves and being happy in
school. After the{:\ave grown,
when they come back and talk
with me and say such kind
things, it makes me happy."”
Among other recognition,
Miss Toles was nominated to
the Georgia Teacher Hall of
Fame in 1979. Her teaching
methods and student creations
have been the subjects of
numerous articles in national
educational publications.

letting me teach you. I'm Frateful to Chattooga Coun

t{ to work with the children for such a long time. The
children are the most valuable asset any community
has. It’s been a pleasure to serve you this long.” Beam
