Student Competes In
Coon Hunting Show
By KAY ABBOTT
Staff Writer
Competing in a sport was
once considered a male domain,
14-year-old Felecia Walker has
proven that even young women
can erg‘oy raccoon hunting and
coon dogs.
The Summerville Junior
High student has been in
terested in coon hunting since
she was 12 and is responsible
for training a champion Walker
Hound, L‘;‘!cGraw‘s Dolly.
She and her dog have won
over 30 trophies in the past
seven months of eomgetit.ion in
National Kennel Club and
United Kennel Club shows.
The dog has earned the title of
Grand Treeing Chm:\f:ion in
the NKC, is a Dual Show
Champion and placed third in
show at the Alabama State
Chamfi;ionship.
Alt ou%lh many women
raise and show coon d‘%s all
over the country, Miss Walker
is the youngest female coon
hound enthusiast in the area.
The seventh grade student will
join a number of women par
ticipating in the show and tree
ing contests this weekend at
Gore Community Center dur
ing the NKC World Coon Hunt
June 5-7.
“The World Coon Hunt is
the biggest I've ever been in,”
ing her champion Walker Hound
McGraw's Dolly, at the bench show and
treeing contest Saturday afternoon.
Above, Miss Walker disglays Dolly and
her trophies. (Staff photo by Kay Abbott).
she said. ““It’s the tog show in
the count‘;a' for NKC.”
Miss Walker first became
interested in the show aspects
of her sport when she attend
ed the same event in Gore last
year. In response to her en
thusiasm, her uncle and hun
ting chaperone, Cotton
McGraw, bought McGraw's
Dolly for her. The female
Walker Hound is descended
from Diamond Jim, a Grand
Night Champion, and its
mother is also a Night Cham
pion hunter. .
Miss Walker's interest has
earned her the nickname,
*“Coon Dog"’ at school, but she
feels that her friends respect
her accomplishments.
“My friends don’t really
think it's that unusual, but
they just don’t see the Rgint in
huntufi;“ she stated. ““What I
really like about hunting is the
adventure of it. I've alw?iys
been an outdoor person and I
really like being in the woods.”
One objective in hunting for
serious competitors is training
