Headrick Gets
Paving Bid
By KAY ABBOTT
Staff Writer
The Chattooga County
Board of Education met in
special session Monday at 4:15
to open paving bids for the
Summerville Middle School.
Two bids were received.
The low bid of $35 per ton
from Headrick Construction
Co. was unanimously approved
by the board. A bidy of $36 per
ton was submitted b'y Patty
Asphalt and Paving of Lyerly.
Contractor A. W. Headrick
told the board that a state
supervisor will be on the site
during the paving to keep
recorfis of the amount of
asphalt used in the project.
Present for the meeting
were Superintendent Don
Hayes, Cgairman Joel Cook,
Joyce Johnson, William Mit
chell, Leroy Massey, Leon
King, contractors A.W.
Heagrick and Delbert Patty
and a news reporter.
We are asking for bids concerning the feeding of inmates in
the Chattooga County Jail. It seems that there is evidently a
controversy in the County trying to save money and feed
these inmates and especially those from other counties. The
letters read on the radio a day or two ago were very in
teresting but left off so many items that must be charged to
the keeping of these inmates and very shortly we will show
you the exact cost of keeping these inmates and boarding
them for the past 6 months. Again | call your attention to the
fact that no female prisoners may be kept here because of
hiring matrons. We already have 8 females on the payroll and
also 26 male deputies. So if we are making any money boar
ding these prisoners, why does part of our deputies have to
work overtime and also complain constantly about not
enough help. When we changed over and went to feeding the
prisoners from the workcamp, our books will show that we
were saving a substantial amount of money per month and
also feeding the prisoners a good, wholesome meal twice a
day. All meals shall be served with coffee or milk for
breakfast and coffee or tea for dinner and there shall be no
more than 14 hours between meals. The diet shall conform to
the Georgia Dietetic Diet Manual. All foods shall be served at
appropriate temperatures and covered plastic containers. No
eating utensils shall be re-used unless sterilized. All special
diets shall be informed to the Sheriff personnel and a special
meal shall be provided. Any inmate whose religious beliefs
requires a special diet shall be informed to the Sheriff per
sonnel and a special diet shall be provided.
These bids will be opened on June 17, 1986 and the Commis
sioner reserves the right to accept or reject any bid.
