Darden Seeks Training System
For Air National Guard
Seventh District Con
essman George ‘‘Buddy”
Brarden has called for the in
stallation at Savannah of a
sophisticated air combat train
inisystem to be used primari
ly by Georgia and Florida Air
National Guard and Air Force
Reserve units.
Darden said the system,
known as Tactical Air Combat
Training System/Air Combat
Maneuvering Instrumentation
(TACTS/ACMI), would allow
fighter pilots to receive
specialized training even
without going aloft and would
promote better evaluation of
their performance.
Darden, a member of the
House Armed Services Com
mittee, said the sls-million in
stallation would be similar to
others already in use by regular
military units. It allows several
pilots seated at ground-based
consoles to test their combat
flight skills based on data sup
plied from a single fighter
plane flying in a mock
dogfight. Sensors aboard the
plane transmit data to the

conditions.
The system also records
each ground-based pilot's per
formance for later analysis.
“This system lets the
fighter pilot gain valuable ex
perience without ever leaving
the ground,” Darden saida It
saves money through lower
costs for fuel and maintenance
of aircraft which otherwise
would have to log thousands of
hours to provitfe their pilots
with proper training."”
Darden voiced his support
for the proposed
TACTS/ACMI installation at
Savannah in a letter to Rep.
Sam Stratton (D-N. Y.), chair
man of the House Armed Serv
vices Committee's Subcommit
tee on Procurement and
Military Nuclear Systems.
“I believe the procurement
of such a system will help sus

Darden wrote to Stratton.

“Our Air National Guard

U.S. 27 Right-Of-Way
Work Near Completion
Ri%l’\t-of-way acquisition
along U, S, Highwaly 27 from
Summerville to Trion is ex
pected to be completed by the
end of July, clearing the way
for work to begin on widening
the 4.3-mile stretch.
Frank Pinson, scheduling
engineer for the Georgia
Degartment of Transqortatnqn
(DOT) in Cartersville, said
:'?ht&of-way have been obtain
for 219 of 223 tracts and
work on the remaining four
parcels is ex%ected to be com
pleted. bfi the end of next
month. The total amount paid
for the 219 segments of groper
ty has not been tallied, Pinson
said, and a final accounting is
not expected until rights-of
way agguisition work has been
finished.
The DOT began its efforts
to obtain the rights-of-way in
October, 1984, ?’inson said it
usually takes around two years
to complete that aspect of a
road-widening program on pro
{)ects similar in size to the one
etween Trion and
Summerville.
Efforts to relieve the City of
Summerville of some of the
cost of relocating utilities along
the stretch to be widened are
continuing said. The DOT and
the city are discussing a pro
posal for the DOT to Lfiear the
right-of-way rather than Sum
merville having to bear that
cost.
An apparent low bid of
$1,032,949 was received in
May from Cary Harbuck Inc.
of Americus for relocating gas,
sewer and water lines and
clearing the right-of-way.
The city has received
Bledges of $200,000 from the
OT toward that cost. It also
will receive a 6 percent interest
