Investigation Underway
On Rollback Operations
Several car dealers in Nor
thwest Georgia — possibly in
cluding Chattooga County —
are currentlg being in
vestigated for possible
odometer fraud, according to
the Governor’s Office of gon
sumer Affairs.
Bill Cloud of the Consumer
Office declined to saé' whether
lg/pecific dealers in Chattooga
ounty are being investi%?ted,
indicating that it might harm
the current investigating.
“Northwest Georgia seems
to be one of the most serious
areas in the entire state,”
Cloud added, however. He said
vehicles are ‘“‘run back and
forth” between Georgia, Ten
nessee, Alabama an%l North
Carolina frequently to
pergetrate odometer fraud.
he Consumer Affairs Of
fice last year received
assurances of ‘‘voluntary com
pliance” with the state’s laws
against “rolling back” vehicle
odometer’s from a Trion
business, Cloud said. He iden
tified the firm as Strick’s Us
ed Cars.
Under the administrative
“voluntary conépliance" provi
sion, Cloud added, a business
does not admit guilt to any
wrongdoing but assures the
Consumer Affairs Office that
its allegations won't occur in
the future.
If cases involving odometer
fraud are made in Chattooga
County in the future, Cloud
said, the news media will be
notified.
A report over the weekend
from the Consumer Affairs of
fice indicated that at least half
the one-million used cars sold
in Georgia each year have had
their odometers rolled back an
average of 30,000 miles. This
causes car buyers to lose an
averagle of $1,200 on each car,
according to Barry Reid, who
heads the Consumer Affairs
Office. He said the loss is bet
ween S3OO and SSOO for each
10,000 miles deducted from the
odometer.
