Tips For Town And
Country Living
JAPANESE BEETLES,
SERIOUS PEST
IN NORTH GEORGIA
Japanese beetle infesta
tions occur in 40 North Georgia
counties and are slowly moving
southward each year.
The metallic green beetles
with white spots along the
sides, feed on more than 200
kinds of plants, including
vegetables, field crops, or
namentals, fruit and landscape
trees.
Adults usually begin
emerging from the soil about
J unells with extremely heavy
populations emerging in some
areas by the end of the month.
Damaged leaves from the
adults typically have lacy ap-
faearance since they eat out the
eaf tissue between the veins.
Newly infested areas com
monly have very heavy infesta
tions for the first 4-6 years. I
believe that Farasites and
predators help to reduce
populations in followin‘f years.
During June and July,
female beetles deposit eggs in
the soil of lawns and g;stures.
They soon hatch and the larvae
(white grubs) begin to feed on
the grass roots. Larval
development occurs during the
next 10 months and a new
batch of beetles occurs the
following summer. Japanese
beetles are good flyers so they
can go from plant to plant for
feeding and into previously
uninfested areas with ease.
Japanese beetles, where heavy,
can be very damaging to sweet
corn by feedinfi:;n the silk and
preventing pollination.
The insecticide carbaryl
(Sevin) is very effective for the
control of ?;panese beetles.
Use two tablespoons of 50 per
cent wettable powder per
gallon of water for ornamental
plants and two to four tables
poons per gallon for
vegetables. Follow instructions
on pesticide container label.
During heavy adult emergence,
applications every other day
may be necessary to reduce
g(e)gulations. Sometimes (People
ome discouraged and think
they are not getting control,
but actually, beetles are emerg
ing in such large numbers they
overwhelm control measure for
a few days.
I do not recommend traps
for beetle control. Traps were
designed and developecP only as
a survey tool and not for con
trol, although it is impressive
to collect %2 gallon or more
beetles from a trap. What
many people do not realize,
however, is that more beetles
probably have been attracted
to their property in the vicini
ty of the trap than would other
} wise have occurred.
