The five-ton load limit on the Gilreath Mill

Johnson Attacks
PS(C’s Hammock
Tim Johnson, a candidate
for the Georgia Public Service
Commission, plans to raise on
ly $50,000 for the statewide
race this year but says it will
be enough.
“For a race like this, it is
(enough),” the Atlanta resident
said while in Summerville
Tuesday. ‘‘For most, the PSC
is a one-issue race, ‘what are
you going to do about my utili
ty rates?’ "
Johnson, former executive
director of a group called
“Campaign for a Prosperous
Georgia,”” said the incumbent
PSC official, Jim Hammock,
has voted for all utility rate in
crease proposals to come before
the PSC.
Johnson said the PSC
should approach rate issues
like a private business, “‘if you

sq‘end this money.” He said,
““The marketplace is merciless
at times, but it is very effi
cient.”
Referring to the Plant Vog
tle issue, Johnson said the
nuclear glant threatens to in
crease Georgia Power Com
pany's rates 62 percent over
three years. A lot of industries
in Georgia have threatened to
leave the state if rates rise that
much, he said, and many peo
gle may find their electric bill
igher than their mortgage
payments.
Johnson said that although
he is running on a small
budget, the incumbency is not
necessarily an advantage to a
PSC memfier. And he said his
contacts around the state, anti
incumbency feelings toward
the PSC and media coverage
are helping him to get out his
message.
Asked how he would solve
the Plant Vogtle cost problem,
Johnson came out in favor of
co-generation, allowin? firms
to generate their own electrici
ty and sell the surplus to
Georgia Power Co. Such firms
woul§ have to meet certain
technical requirements, he add
ed. Twenty years from now will
see a lot of small generatin
plants in Georgia, he predjcbecf
Investors in a business
can't normally charge off their
bad decisions to their
customers, Johnson said, and
Georgia Power should not be
allowed to do so with Plant
Vogtle.
Johnson also appeared at a
forum in Pennvifie Tuesday
night sponsored by the Sum
merville Business and Profes
sional Woman’s Club (see
related story).
Johnson is running against
Hammock, as is Jim Boyd,
Duluth.
i Insurance {
¢ Assistance {
Warren D. Evans, state
commissioner of insurance, has
issued a reminder that it isn't
necessary for Geor%'ians who
have insurance problems to go
to the State Capitol to get her.
Commissioner Evans has a
team of investigators who pro
vide the services of his office to
centrally located areas
throughout the state at least
once a month.
Commissioner Evans will
have an investigator in Sum
merville July 22 to offer on-the
spot help to those who need it.
The investigator will be at the
Chattooga County Courthouse
from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There
is no fee for this service.

Bridge Has Extra Bracing Underneath
Chattooga County Commissioner Harry Powell says
residents of the Gilreath Mill Road area have nothing
to worry about even if pulpwood trucks do cross the
bridge, which has a 5-ton limit posted. Extra bracing
was placed under the bridge, which was washed out and
then replaced in recent years, Powell said. (Staff photo).
