Conservation Produces Huge Plants
Using a meuwnoa o1 water conservation, Charles Hughes
has grown tomato plants nearly eight feet tall in his
backyard garden on Hilltop Drive. Hughes places gallon
jugs of water at the base of each plant two to three
times a week. The water slowly escapes through tiny
holes punched in the bottom of each jug and is complete-
ly absorbed in the ground. Hughes is shown with his
tomato plants. (Staff photo by Kay Abbott).
Trickle Watering

A method of water conservation has produced an abun
dant crop of tomatoes for Charles Hugfies. Summerville.
Hughes' backyard garden has produced tomato plants
that are nearly eight feet tall and are still growing. The resi
dent feels that his watering system is tire reason for his
success.
About three times a week, Hughes fills several gallon
jugs with water and places them at the base of the tomato
plants. The water gradually seeps out through tiny holes
in the bottom of each jug.
“You use a lot less water on your plants with this
method,”” Hughes stated. The best part afiout it is that all
of the water is absorbed gradually and none is wasted.
When you water your plants with a garden hose, most of
it just runs off.”
Hughes learned about the technique from a fellow
gardener. He has several varieties 0){ tomatoes in his
garden, incuding Better Boys and Early Girls.
