Members of the Chattooga
and Trion varsity tennis teams,
normally rivals, have teamed
up to win several events in na
tionally sanctioned tour
naments across the state.
Trion senior Angela Owens
has played mixed doubles with
Jeff Weaver, a senior at CHS,
for aplproximately two years.
Traveling with a team of high
school tennis standouts
directed by coach Craig Jones,
Rome, the team of Owens and
Weaver has won a number of
tournament events in doubles
and singles this year. The team
is sponsored by the Coosa
Country Club, Rome.
J oining Miss Owens last
month, Ellen Thompson, a
junior at Chattooga High,
played her first sanctioned
tournament at the Dellinger
Park Invitational Tournament,
Cartersville. Together, Miss
Thompson and %Vliss Owens
won the 18-division doubles
championship June 22.
According to Miss Owens,
Trion and ghattooga tennis
team members often practice
together on their own time,
although they are oYponents
during high school tennis
season.
*lt’s not really unusual for
us to play together,"” she said,
‘“Although we are from opfi»os
ing schools in varsity play.
Tennis is not as bad as other
sports in that respect. We just
have a good time when we play
because we know all the people
on the CHS team.”
Playing in tournaments
sanctioned by the United
States Tennis Association and
the Georgia Tennis Associa
tion is necessary for an
amateur to achieve a status
rating from the association.
That rating number is the in
dication 0? a player’'s ability
ranked against ali'other state
players in his age division. Ac
cording to Miss Owens, those
numbers are important when
college scouts make their
choices for tennis scholarships.
““My reason for playing in
these tournaments 1s to get a
college scholarship,” she said.
“You have to play in these
sanctioned tournaments to get
a state or national rating. You
earn points for each tourna
ment according to its size and
importance. Efien and I talked
about playing in the tour
naments. I thought if we
Elayed doubles, it would help
er get started.”
Currently, Owens is ranked

“When you figure out the
percentages, we are within a
tenth of a point of being equal
ly ranked,”” Miss Owens
pointed out.
Entering‘gxe Georgia tennis
circuit has been an eye-opening
experience for the Chattooga
County students.
“The big difference in play
ing these tournaments is
you're around little kids nine
and 10 years old who can hit
the ball as well as you,” the
Trion senior said. ‘‘Around
here, only the older people can
play that well.”
